We think that high on the list of contributors to the reduction of crime is a total community effort and uh a total city and police department effort. We think that uh significant among the community's contributions is uh the block club concept where neighborhood individuals come together and discuss what they believe to be local community neighborhood problems and they run all the way from from purse snatches, burglaries, shootings u to how often they would like the street swept that kind of thing. So um we think that the block club concept is very significant. uh there's a new attitude in the police department and there's a new attitude in the community and I think the the both of the two of us are coming closer and closer together every day because in fact um the police department is simply an extension of any Okay, I'd like to go through the first page here. >> Oh, okay. Um starting with why the press conference is being called well Compton uh is evaluating a 15% reduction over over last year during the first six months of this year in relationship to the first six months of last year and funds. That's one of the um city manager's prime concerns and he is sensitizing me and I'm trying to sensitize the police department to the to the notion that um federal funds do not last forever and we're going to have to stand on our own two feet. But I think that crime was at such a state in this city over the last two years that we have tremendously welcome the federal assist. But uh as we get crime down, I think we will be rejuvenating the economic community and uh I see on the horizon the day when this city can't afford to take care of its municipal obligations without the assistance of federal funds. >> How much money do you get in federal funds uh to support the police?
