The KTLA newsfilm collection at the UCLA Film & Television Archive consists of cut and unedited stories, outtakes and fill footage, originally shot on 16mm reversal film stock with magnetic soundtrack. Some footage, particularly material not used for broadcast, may be without sound.

Summary: Two formerly incarcerated women talk to a reporter about the lack of meaningful rehabilitation programs to adequately prepare them for life after release from prison. An unidentified official is interviewed about the lack of work referral programs for women due to lack of facility space and acknowledges that such rehabilitation programs are available to men. Another unidentified interviewee, possibly an advocate for the incarcerated, states that California doesn't have any true rehabilitation programs. Includes shots of a prison facility, prison cell, and incarcerated women sitting at a table watching television.

[Music] let's go through that one again shall we you were just dropped on the earth there you are with $12 that's what I got out with last time $12 and no place to go you know so they don't really have any programs that are that are meaningful as far as I'm concerned Loretta how about you did they get you ready in any way for outside no they didn't do anything like I worked in the kitchen and I think just about anybody can work in a kitchen I feel personally that uh we put people in jail to uh uh punish them to a degree and provide them with opportunities to become better citizens when they do return to society what is done here to prepare women for re-entry to society we have a number of programs uh five areas or programs if you will which provide uh inmates an opportunity to prepare themselves for uh the outside I know there's a very successful work Furlow program for men that enables them to hold on to their jobs while they're serving time in jail do you have a program no we do not have a work Furlow program for females at this facility why we haven't yet reached that point what's needed well facilities for one we don't have enough room here to provide that type of of uh of uh program uh at this particular time we are the only facility that houses females in the county here we have an entire facility we have both a jail facility and a correctional facility and it's so I imagine it's a matter of space it is in my mind anyway a matter of space are any steps being taken to correct that we're conducting some studies at this time yes well we don't have rehabilitation in the state of California uh it's a misnomer but I think that most astute observers would conclude that Rehabilitation is a word behind which uh there is no uh there aren't any facts
