The KTLA newsfilm collection at UCLA consists of cut and unedited stories, outtakes and fill footage, originally shot on 16mm reversal film stock with magnetic soundtrack. Some footage, particularly material not used for broadcast, may be without sound.

Summary: Reporter Larry McCormick covers the groundbreaking ceremony for a redevelopment project in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. Both city officials and community members, most of them African American, were present for the groundbreaking ceremony. The project, which will create many new jobs in the community, is comprised of sixty new homes and a park area. Footage includes shots of an artist's rendering of the completed project, eight men digging into the ground and posing for pictures, Junior ROTC color guard, a choir in robes, and different men addressing the crowd. Note some of the footage is silent.

[Silence]. [Junior ROTC color guard leader issuing commands to troop. Undecipherable.] [Junior ROTC color guard drummers drumming.] [Sound of choir singing off camera]. [Sound of crowd clapping off camera]. [Man talking over loudspeaker off camera] For one it's not windy and it appears as though the powers that be have blessed us with this kind of the weather to make our auspicious occasion even more [undecipherable]. [Man talking over loudspeaker off camera] There are many, many people who share... [Man talking over loudspeaker off camera]...To leave and going to the BYOA [?] meeting try to help this sprinkled [?] with another project that has had some problems... [Reporter Larry McCormick] Many, many occasions in fact it seems as though almost every other time I make an appearance somewhere I turn around and there he is... President Pro Tempore of the Los Angeles City Council, Councilmen Billy G. Mills. [Audience clapping]. [McCormick talking. Unintelligible]. [Reporter McCormick]...regains his breath. [Audience laughing]. [Councilman Billy G. Mills] I never pass up an opportunity to speak on behalf of progress and if he had called my name from the Harbor freeway, I would get back over here in order to respond that call. The needs of the central city are great. I believe that this groundbreaking is evidence of the beginning of a kind of rebuilding in our community which can be meaningful. Meaningful not only to the people here but to people throughout the world who are watching what you do here? So I would urge those of you who will find a lot of things wrong with the project, a lot of things wrong with redevelopment, a lot of things wrong with your neighbors and with your friends be very careful to make sure that people do not... [McCormick] It was an auspicious moment here at a ground breaking at 103rd and Graham Street in the heart of Watts today. The first units of the Community Redevelopment Agency's brand new project that will end with 64 homes being built on this lot. 125 jobs will be created in the construction of those homes. City officials were on hand here today to help inaugurate this big beginning and there were many community people present, not all happy...that's another story. But it's concluded the 64 home track will be the first of what's hoped will be more than 500 homes in the greater Watts area. These expected that this particular site will be completed by sometime next fall. Which means that many of the occupants of this community will be celebrating next Christmas, Christmas 1972, in beautiful new home's right in this area. Maybe when it's all completed and the homes are ready for occupancy we'll come back and visit again Larry McCormick, Channel 5 News, from Watts.
