Summary: In January of 1976, a new state law went into effect in California that required prison sentences for individuals who use a gun during the commission of a crime. In August of 1977, the California Stop Crime Coalition launched a media campaign with the goal of reducing gun-related crime by 30%. The clip begins with two of the organization’s public service announcements (PSAs) featuring the slogan “use a gun, go to prison.” At a news conference, an unidentified man states judges and prosecutors are following the new law and 75% of individuals convicted of this type of crime are being sentenced to time in state prison. Governor Jerry Brown talks about the PSAs as an example of the private sector providing funding to raise public awareness about the consequences for such dangerous offenses.

My job is to enforce the law. And if I catch you using a gun while committing a crime, you're going to go to prison. >> Use a gun, go to prison. Don't do it. >> If you're convicted of using a gun while committing a crime, I'll send you to the state prison. That's the law, and it's a good one. Use a gun. Go to prison. Don't do it. Now, since the law has been in existence, I'm pleased to report to you that the prosecutors in this state and the judges are following the law and we are tracking it. And our latest surveys indicate that now some 75% of these individuals convicted of these kinds of crimes are being sentenced to serve time in state prison. Here we have an example of the private sector businessmen, the Chamber of Commerce putting up their money to put on television to put out to the people of this state the serious consequences of using a gun in the commission of a crime. It's a particularly dangerous offense and it's something that we ought to try to eliminate to the maximum degree possible.
