field literally abandoned to die were delivered these unwanted born of War One Man gathers them in love loves and leads them feeds and finds for them new lives and new homes across the sea he is Harry Holt farmer father from Creswell Oregon who in response to an anguished cry comes a great distance to answer yes Lord here am I he sets aside family friends Fortune he becomes physician counselor leader friend they call him harabi grandfather [Music] [Music] [Music] Portland's International Airport October 1955 his wife friends neighbors have come to Welcome Home an Oregon farmer Harry Holt returns from Korea and brings back as his own eight War orphans the children are gathered up by eager hands their long journey almost over Harry Holt has determined the first to be saved will not be the last they will be taken to the spacious Holt home near Creswell and Bertha Holt having already raised six of her own will be amony mother to eight new tiny Holts they will learn to pray and believe as their father who knows his God to be real Harry hool's children will grow in the strength of his faith and will live to view Horizons that reach far beyond the war torn land from which they came in 1961 Harry Holt begins construction of his farm at the base of a wooded Mountain near Ilan the orphanage will ultimately consist of 40 buildings built of concrete built to last the land comes cheap it is only 4 miles from the 38th parallel here is to be built a new orphanage for the many hundreds of children living in overcrowded quarters in nearby soul Harry Holt's dedication and drive inspires the enlistment of others to his side but it will be for the Oregon lumberman to personally underwrite the entire project with his life savings the man from Creswell willingly makes that commitment 700 children a year are brought to the doors of the illan orphanage many thousands over the span of years 3,000 who have homes found for them in America no matter how small or how they have been brought into the world he takes the children in once bloated starved nearer death and life the abandoned are now loved and tended once their caring was his alone now there is help a staff of 300 once a moving van served as shelter Against The Storm now a modern Nursery secures an infant's precarious hold on life [Music] it's all much easier now charts and Records daily weight checks protect the child's [Music] progress but there is a need that Harry Holt with all his tireless energy and will cannot fully Supply the demand for it is constant and critical where children are cared for on a mass basis this commodity must be do out is the most treasured of rare gifts Harry Holt has given of love all he can but it is never enough for each youngster there must be a mother and father to love them [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] at Ilan now nurses and children are all aware of a very special day is coming from America will arrive many amones and abuji mothers and fathers at Los Angeles International Airport a unique Caravan forms by plane bus and automobile families from the West Oregon Washington California arrive from the Midwest Couples from Minnesota Michigan Ohio [Music] Ed and Grace Calbert arrived from their home in a suburb outside of Metropolitan Los Angeles they entered the terminal with other arriving couples eager to check in and to meet for the first time their fellow travelers all are here because of a common need a need that will bind strangers as friends for a long time to come for the calvs this trip began in a house in seei Valley by seeing it on the Loretta Young show the story of Harry Holt and him adopting his eight and I just couldn't help but think how much we have and how little they have over there and seeing my children with so many toys and all these things and always plenty of food and and seeing the pictures of these little children over there with just nothing so uh it was just on my mind but we weren't financially able to even think about anything like that at the moment but it wasn't too long after that when we sold an acre of our property off and so that's when I began talking to ited about it I thought this was something we both had to agree on wholeheartedly and if he didn't then I didn't want to the calverts along with 32 other couples and bark on the Great Adventure for the majority it is a first trip to Korea and a first child others have already claimed children at Ilan and return for additional brothers and sisters many visit children they have supported over the years they will now bring their sons and daughters home all have come many miles and Will Travel many more but they will not be afraid if it is the Lord's will that my children and the childless couples of America get together Harry H the vows then the devil and All His angels can't keep them apart some label this chartered flight an airlift of love the cruise pattern is North to Alaska then out across the Pacific flying the shortest distance possible over the water flying time for flight 189 is 19 hours to Soul it is 3 hours and 45 minutes out of Anchorage to the International Date Line and a breakthrough to tomorrow there is time now for the unraveling of nerves and bodies valued moments to relax and reflect I guess it started for us when I read the book seed from the East and at that time I just got a burden to go and help these people out these these little Oriental children we have been trying for 2 years and uh we think possibly the Lord me for us to take this trip if we' got a baby through the aoxy adoption it would have been a one child and by going over there we are going to be blessed with two children we have four children of our own but they're just as thrilled and happy as we are to know that we're going to have another little girl in the family I we chartered the plane we know notified these families and uh some of them borrowed money on their home some borrowed it on their insurance some of them used their savings uh because the main thing was that with them they wanted to get the children so we told them we couldn't raise the money that quick but we would take the next flight available and we immediately refinanced our house and got our money set aside and see what we can do for the holds that's the main thing is to help the babies I adopted my first one oh in 1958 and uh Patty was uh when she arrived in the state she was 3 months old weighed 6 lb my second daughter uh came in when she was about uh 17 months old and uh couple of years passed and this Rec past November I adopted my third daughter and we're hoping if we give these children it is both 11:00 a.m. Saturday and 11:00 a.m. Sunday as flight 189 crosses the 180th Meridian the International Date Line with a hym sing and worship service 30,000 ft up in the [Music] sky un my soul myor to the great th how great th [Applause] [Music] sing [Applause] [Music] the thoughts can be swifter than flight they precede ahead to Ill on where a child Waits who will know the other first was the choice right will the wish to love make it so flight 189 loses its race with the sun 19 hours of daylight fuse into night ahead kimpo Airfield Soul Korea [Music] yeah we're stuck aren't we right up there it is 1 a.m. in the morning Korean time a somber Customs officer boards he mirrors the mood of the land the Kimo Air Terminal not unlike San Francisco or St Louis except for the subtle tension which brushes against all who enter the city of Soul only 20 M from the 38th parallel [Applause] how many 93 passers only one friendly face Waits Harry Holt is here to reassure and make welcome he will be the host and do all he can to make their stay a comfortable one Mr Holt's happiness of on the arrival of these weary parents from America seems to uplift and inspire all thoughts now are of [Music] tomorrow this is the valley of Ilan Korea land of the morning calm its Hills and lanss are as the people enduring through the ravages of time and War [Music] only the H Farm and orphanage are testimony to a quickening pace here last minute preparations for special visitors Mr Holt's first assistant Brother Juan checks on details as to sleeping and feeding Provisions for the arriving parents it is most important the company from America be made to feel at home eggs are 50 cents a piece in Korea but this is a special day [Music] then they are here but a flooded stream forces the parents to abandon their bus none choose to wait for the vehicle to be moved all will walk the last half mile perhaps this is as it should be that this long journey end on foot a humble pilgrimage [Music] Brother Juan rushes out to meet his guests he informs them the children are waiting there will be no delay [Music] there'll be no need for introductions the nurses know exactly to whom the babies will be delivered and the older children have long known their new parents through months of exchanging photographs and correspondence there remains now only their meeting all who have searched have found [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] but what of those who watch from the sidelines those who have no new mother and father what of the little girl who must settle for a stick of gum instead of a parent's love this is the sadness that Shades every joyful adoption some must always remain behind it is Harry Holt's dream that one day none of his children will lack for a family to take them in a curious Tableau now unfold people who were but a few hours earlier tightly bound together by a singular desire and uniting experience break off now into intimate groups the beginning of a new life together for parents and children the beginning of all that matters [Music] [Applause] [Music] spe for one couple there is time for a look and listen to the sights and sounds of a strange new land what better guide than Kim their new son [Applause] [Music] [Music] included in the days itinerary is the ampute center of soul there is an appointment to be kept with a do stings medical chief of the [Music] [Applause] center between the doctor and his young patient Kim a clear and special bond and then you can tell that it's see see there's nothing heavy about it it's just an even pressure but whenever you get it so that it pushes hard in one particular point then watch him for a few days to see that he doesn't develop any pressure s it should last about a year and a half to two years with minor adjustments from time to time the joints begin to squeak or click all you have to do is put a little oil on them ja and I'm Jack this is for the children yet unclaimed there is a show by Mr funny buttons D [Applause] [Music] McKinnon Jack fell down and broke his crown and jaill came [Applause] come all language barriers are quickly overcome with that one common denominator laughter now let's go out to the farm yeah it's early in the morning the sun is coming out [Music] [Applause] ilan's needs are insatiable gifts borne 9,000 M will be put to use immediately diapers shoes winter clothes medicine even soap is supplied precious canned foods donated by American companies will be stored up for winter groups of devoted parents all over the United States band together to make the supplies available having received they themselves give [Music] [Applause] [Music] a group of fathers have been coralled by engineer Lee he informs them that a bulldozer a virtually indispensable tool to the ever expanding orphanage is out of service fortunately these men who have come to Korea include mechanics and Engineers among them the machine is temporarily patched up new parts will be sent upon their return to the states [Music] [Applause] during one of his frequent Court sessions Harry Holt confides with a friend that the need for money is growing more critical with every new goal set there is the new hospital already the foundation has been laid but work has been halted money it is needed for everything from where will it [Music] come to this man of Faith such problems are not new he has met them all too frequently before Brother Juan asks for time to tell of a Water Crisis the supply of fresh water to the orphanage is becoming low the rains have been slow and coming water is to be used only for drinking and cooking and the bathing of children in the nursery engineer Lee's latest problem concerns faulty valves in a generator they will have to be replaced Mr Holt suggests that they try reg grinding them all problems whether they be large or small are brought to grandfather Holt harabi often he is tired worn to the point of dangerous exhaustion he is not well but he turns no one away for Harry Holt life has no other purpose at this moment several parents are in need of his help red tape is bogging down their leaving for home on time this Harry Holt must deal with quickly he packs them all into the orphanage truck he'll drive them to the American Embassy and soul do all he can to expedite their adoption papers the miles are not many the Oregon farmer has driven the winding rut filled Road endless times on missions of Mercy ever seeking the children without hope though he cares for hundreds there is always one more [Applause] [Music] most of the time in Soul will be spent waiting the wheels of bureaucracy are made to turn but they turn slowly all are reassured happily anticipating their return home Harry Holt shares their Joy but for him the work goes on new arrivals abandoned children left at the the orphanage office he must take them immediately back to ilon for needed care let the parents shop and sightsee and he will return for them soon so it is alone he bends to The Familiar Road it is 16 mil from Soul to Ilan today the road seems endless so much more to do how much can one man do in a lifetime the man from Creswell Oran has traveled far now he is suddenly weary there is a pain in the chest a familiar twinge grown suddenly large a short trip home evolves into a desperate race he had known of the rendevu but not the hour but now he knows this is the day of God in the middle of the night you know I had a clock he come and got some pills out of the thing and I asked him then it was you all right just a little tired Mr H is dead Mr died oh [Applause] my ohe unscheduled unplanned what was to be here the record of a man's accomplishment documents the moment of his death [Music] [Music] as the shock of this moment engulfs the parents they realize they must return to Ilan a place suddenly stricken it doesn't seem this is the same land it was yesterday Harry Holt chose Korea for his adopted land he built a monument here the orphanage of ilen death was no stranger to this man [Music] shock Echoes In The Quiet landscape and word of grandfather's death travels throughout the Korean Countryside now the tributes arrive they come from all over South Korea they come from those in all walks of life [Music] they are the first to say goodbye the children who were his care [Music] are the [Music] [Applause] [Music] an old friend Fashions a solid mahogany casket Harry Holt was an Oregon lumberman who knew fine wood he would have appreciated this last gentle gesture even to the cloth that is to line his beer woven by the handicapped children of Ilan oh lord for him who so unsparingly loved us make Eternal Light to perpetually guide and shine upon him in the halls of Heaven the Children's Service is over Cho to be found as well as purpose once more he had taught them to live unafraid [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] she comes amony Holt is in Korea I felt like I belonged there at that moment I have a family at home that I have to take care of but uh I knew that Harry wanted to be buried in Korea he had requested [Music] that hers is not a sad Mission alone but rather a symbol of Life Contin in the strength which was Harry's now flows through her to the waiting people of Ilan homes will be found for the children as before the care of the orphanage will continue God's will is done we will carry on so says Bertha Holt let us now pick Harry's gravite and with this a small Resolute group starts off on this singular mission [Music] they search for the final resting place in the valley beside a familiar path in the shadow of the Cross he followed high on this hill overlooking the valley of ilon Harry Holt's body will rest [Music] [Music] all [Music] this is the day of goodbye they come from Village and City farm and Far Away these lives all touched by this one life they fill the orphanage Chapel not forgetting Timeless custom as they will not forget the man who for a moment was with them [Music] [Applause] [Music] are [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] I am the resurrection and the life sayth the Lord he that believeth in me though he were dead yet shall he live and whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die I know that my Redeemer liveth and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the Earth and though this body be destroyed yet shall I see God whom I shall see for myself and mine eyes Shall Behold and not as a stranger ashes dust to dust in the sure and certain hope of the Resurrection ction to eternal life through Jesus Christ Our [Music] [Applause] Lord the walk back seems long and bereft of reason yet somewhere there is a [Applause] [Music] victory for Harry Holt it will be found in many tomorrows whenever air transports take off from Korea and land in America with a cargo of Korean orphans it will be found in the faces of children now belonging found also in the faces of The Seekers now having found aboard their chartered Air transport the tensions of a few hours before begin to fade in the excitement and anticipation of going home congratulate all your new parents on your adopted children in command of the aircraft at this time Captain children whose names were jungu Kim Lee will answer now to Paul Christine Barbara they will be cradled cuddled spoiled and showered with attention and adoration they'll be paddled and punished pampered and petted wanted children now they have come up even with life it's a long way from an ills Sun Mountain Side to an airliner winging out over the Pacific and route to the United States Mainland 24 hours lost will soon be reclaimed as will be the lives of the young [Music] abore now now the other one [Music] dark why didn't you put her over [Music] here and a man's dream will precede them A Sky Full of children being fed across the sea but Harry Holt more than any other man knew how many still remained at Ilan no matter how many might be moved by their plight there would be children passed by their very lives and Welfare depending upon Hillson the realizing of a man's dream continues another Caring Hands every day the children still go to the potato Fields they help themselves as others help them Harry Holt farmer from Oregon understood growing things where there was nothing before but need he fashioned hope before the enormity of man's sufferings only a handful of those who see are not dismayed Harry Holt was one of these
