Koko, a gentle gorilla, lives with Dr. Francine Penny Patterson, who, as a student cared for Koko during a prolonged illness and later, taught her sign Language . This film documents Koko's loving relationship with the kitten, All-Ball. When All-Ball is run over by a car, Koko grieves for her lost companion and eventually asks for a new friend. On the day she receives a red manx cat, Koko joyfully signs love that baby.
