Description: This film takes a look at the Kodak Rapid Color Processor Model 11 manufactured in 1963. Its release presented a leap forward from the tray processing that home photographers had been using previously for color print processing and it was nearly as fast as black and white print processing. The film opens with the information it will present the procedure for processing color prints with this model which could be done in the same length of time as the film; 7 minutes and 45 seconds (:17). The Kodak Ektacolor Professional paper is pointed to which will be required (:34). The CP-5 one-quart chemical processing kit (:43) contained five solutions with four of them arriving pre-mixed in graduated polyethylene containers (:56). The Kodak Rapid Color Processor model 11 is then shown (:58) and its features are broken down. The stainless-steel drum is pictured as the heart of the processor (1:17) and this holds several gallons of water which maintain the 100-degree developer. A close up is provided of the texturized drum finish (1:27) that rotates while drawing up solution from the tray and maintains the liquid that the paper floats on. The instrument must be level to ensure even upward flow of solution (1:42). The paper remains unscathed as it never contacts the drum (1:51). The man in the demonstration uses a spirit level to check balance prior to staring (2:02). This kit came equipped with a thermometer (2:10) and the running discharge water should be checked to be at 100 degrees (2:13). The drum and tray are rinsed, dried and cleaned before beginning (2:19). A span of the beakers which were to be used follow as well as the demonstration man pouring the developer out last (2:58). Of each of the solutions, approximately four ounces were required (3:05). The timer is set for 7 minutes and 45 seconds (3:15), the motor drive is turned on and the developer is poured into the tray (3:17). The blanket is to be immersed in a full tray of water (3:29) and the bar is to be set with webbing facing upwards. For this film, the room lights are left on, though normally this is where they would be shut off to continue the process (3:40). The exposed print is retrieved from the dark drawer (3:44) while the timer is started. The paper is immersed in the tray with the emulsion side facing down for 25 seconds (3:47) before flipping over and moving the edge up so it covers half of the bar and both are removed together (3:56). These are drained for ten seconds (4:12) and placed over the drum. Developer was to remain for four and a half minutes (4:22). It should be dumped a few seconds prior to the elapsed time (4:25). A thirty second rinse follows the dumping of the developer (4:29) and the stop fixture is added (4:36) and maintained for thirty seconds. This was also to be dumped and rinsed for another thirty seconds (4:41). In real life with room lights out, this is where they would be flicked back on (4:48), at three and a half minutes. An example is provided of when there is not a steady supply of hot water available for rinses. This includes four-quart containers filled with 102-degree temperature water that would serve as each of the four thirty second rinses (5:03). The third solution of bleach is added (5:23), held for one minute, dumped and rinsed again (5:31). The formalin fixer is added for thirty seconds and dumped and rinsed (5:51). The final solution, the stabilizer, is added for thirty seconds, dumped and not rinsed (6:15). At this point the processing is considered complete (6:28). From here, the motor drive is halted, blanket is removed and placed into the tray (6:33) and the print is removed and set aside. The motor is then turned back on with the blanket set over it and it’s entirety is rinsed and dried (6:46). The blanket will then be hung up to dry and the motor is shut off (7:13). The completed print is shown of a child in a football helmet (7:25) and the film then shows a montage of other prints (7:37) as this machine could be used to personal or professional purposes. It concludes and was a Kodak Informational Film (8:16).

the film you are about to see runs seven minutes and 45 seconds we would like to show you how in this same period of time you can now completely process a color print either 11 by 14 or 8 by 10 we would like to show you how quickly easily and efficiently this can be done and with repeatable results virtually guaranteed this is the way the new system first you'll need ekta color professional paper which you have been using for making fine quality prints by other methods second the new CP 51 port chemical processing kit only five solutions and four come to you pre-mixed in graduated polyethylene container and third the Kodak rapid color processor model 11 a new concept in ease of making color prints let's quickly look at some of the features of this unusual piece of equipment the stainless steel drum is the heart of the operation the drum holds several gallons of tempered water which maintains the 100 degree developer and the drum has a specially designed textured finish as it rotates it draws up solution from the tray and maintains a liquid layer that the paper floats on the spre viding even rapid chemical action throughout the processing cycle it is important that the apparatus be level at all times so the upward flow of solutions is even the paper cannot be scratched or streak since it never actually makes contact with the drum and now a look at the processor in action although the apparatus has been leveled previously it is advisable to keep a spirit level handy and check level prior to starting work a thermometer is provided with the processor when running water is used the discharge temperature should read 100 degrees before starting it is good practice to rinse the drum and tray with running water cleanliness always pays off in trouble free results wipe up the excess moisture with a cellulose sponge and dry thoroughly both drum and tray with a clean towel even slight dilution of the developer may cause minor variations in color or density set the beakers out in order and pour the developer out last four ounces of each solution is required and store the developer in a glass container the other four solutions may of course be kept in plastic containers set the timer to 7 minutes 45 seconds while still in white light turn on the motor drive and pour developer into the tray and you're ready to go check visually to see even flow of solution now immerse the blanket in a full tray of water being sure the underside of the bar is wet turn the bar a half turn away from you so the webbing is up room lights out which we leave on here for the demonstration and take exposed print from dark drawer and start timer immerse the paper emulsion down and agitate lightly for about 25 seconds now turn the paper over and slide the edge up so it covers about one-half the bar hold lightly with thumbs and lift out of the tray rotate the bar upward half a turn and print is in proper position drain for 10 seconds and placed blanket and prints on drum as the second hand crosses zero developer is in for two and a half minutes dump it five seconds prior to the elapsed time rinse immediately with 100 degree water for 30 seconds the tube does not have to be replaced in sump after developing is done pour in stop fixer the second solution and maintain for 30 seconds drain rinse for 30 seconds at this point three and a half minutes room lights can be turned on if unlimited quantities of hot water are not available an alternate method of rinsing can be used before starting simply fill for quart containers with water at about 102 degrees a quart of water dispensed slowly and evenly will serve each of the 4 30 second rinses required now solution 3 the bleach is added and held for 1 minute drain and rinse for 30 seconds add solution for the formalin fixer hold for 30 seconds dump and once again rinse for 30 seconds add solution 5 the stabilizer hold for 30 seconds do not rinse after this step the processing is now completed stop the motor drive remove blanket placing it in the tray remove the print and immediately turn on the motor drive replace the blanket and rinse the drum blanket and tray for about 15 seconds normally do not run motor drive with blanket on without paper this creates too much friction and can overload motor drive however for this short cleaning operation this is permissible hang up blanket to dry and if you wish rinse for a few more seconds wipe then turn off motor drive and there's your print air drying or Farrow typing will bring out the true colors in short order whatever your interest in color prints whether pictures of family or friends or scenics however specialized your requirements wherever color prints can do a job for work or pleasure in any field of endeavor for whatever the purpose consider using the new easy economical way for color prints of professional quality made with the Kodak rapid color processor model 11
