Description: Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news for September 20, 1966. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast and can be obtained from History San Jose. Reel 1: Reel 3 (sound): Interview with San Jose State quarterback Danny Holman, who was named player of the week by Santa Clara County Sportswriters and Broadcasters. Script reads, "We asked Holman how this brand of football is different from junior college ball." Holman begins, "The difference is mainly in the linebacking. It's hard to pass on drop backs..." Segment 1 (sound): Interview with Santa Clara County Assessor Dwight Mathiesen regarding delays to promised audit of 184 Santa Clara County firms. Mathiesen says his auditors have started the process, but there are state auditors have been delayed due to issues such as recruiting. He is asked if the delay had anything to do with the primary election. Segment 2 (sound): Footage of Rear Admiral Dennis Lyndon, head of the Naval Reserve Program, disembarking from an airplane. He is then interviewed. Script reads, "[Lyndon] landed at Moffett Field this morning to inspect local reserve centers. He didn't predict a reserve call up, but emphasized the Navy Reserve IS in Vietnam." Lyndon comments that the Navy is not taking the same number of casualties that the Army and Marines are, but that they do have a considerable number of reservists, Seabees, medical personnel in Vietnam who are taking their share of casualties... Segment 3 (silent): Parents and babies are seen "training" for the Diaper Derby at the Santa Cruz County Fair. Babies are placed in the center of a large circle of parachute material on the grass and are then cajoled to crawl towards their parents. Script reads, "At a signal from the referee it was every man for himself. It was also every young lady for herself, for in this event there is no discrimination of the sexes...in fact, sometimes it's hard to tell one from the other. There are only two basic rules. All racers must be less than one year old and no contestant may stand or walk on pain of instant disqualification. Some entrants were very quick off the mark. But there were those that needed coaxing...and coaxing...and coaxing...and yet more coaxing." Segment 4 (silent): Gravel truck stopped in middle of road at scene of traffic accident. Script reads, "The spectacular crash occurred on Tully Road by the Coyote River. The empty twin binned truck driven by Sal Calamia of 827 Palm Street in San Jose jack-knifed after it swerved to avoid a car. The driver Richard Vaggione of Santa Cruz was apparently oblivious of the truck..." Reel 2: Segment 1 (sound): Dennis Rowedder interviews a contestant training for the Santa Cruz County Fair lumberjack contest. The man is sawing a large redwood trunk with hand-held saw. Rowedder jokes that he thinks the man is doing it wrong, and disappears for a second, returning with a chain saw. He fires up the chain saw and spends several seconds sawing the redwood before stopping and joking that he'll be back tomorrow. Segment 2 (sound): Interview with San Jose Redevelopment Director Olny Smith, about absentee landlords in East San Jose. Smith says that there are suggestions that absentee owners rent properties in blighted areas and charge substantial rents but do not make any improvements to the properties. He says he doesn't have the figures, but there are a lot of properties in Eastside that are in need of immediate improvement. Segment 3 (silent): Shot of parking lot outside of supermarket, then close-up shots of a birds nest above the store's speaker. Script reads, "The nest is at the Bay Mart store in San Jose. It was built by a family of sparrows. They chose for their home a loudspeaker under the eaves and wove a nest of twigs and shreds of newspaper. As the speaker vibrated to the music, the sparrows kept the rhythm and raised their family. It may be the first instance of music to hatch eggs by." Segment 3 (silent): Shots of a large tank on the road, being hauled up onto a dump truck as a man looks on. Script reads, "It was not a good day for 23-year old Larry Kroeker of 2126 Marques, San Jose. A thousand gallon water tank cut loose and bounced off his truck in the intersection of Stevens Creek and San Thomas Expressway. Kroeker is one of the sons of Dan and Sons Excavating contractor, and he had been delivering the tank to a construction job.
