Description: Reels A-C and D-G of KNTV San Jose broadcast news footage for March 30,1966. Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent + sound): Castroville residents are angry and indignant over study released by Stanford University Professor Theodore Parsons concluding that Castroville Mexican Americans are treated as badly as Negroes in the white south, facing discrimination in all facets of life. Opens with silent shots of Castroville sign and shops along main street, including McCarthy Hardware, signs for French fried artichokes and Artichoke Drive-In Restaurant. Three people are interviewed: Mrs. Lenore Jiminez, school secretary, says that if there is discrimination in the schools, she hasn't seen it, and they are working to solve historical problems with equal access to education in the classroom. Charles Jaurigue, vice president of local Mexican American political association says that he thinks the report is exaggerated and nothing they can't work out on their own. Jack Simon, Chamber of Commerce president, says they have appointed a nine-man committee to examine the report and recommend action, but he also feels it's exaggerated. Segment 2: San Jose resident Paul Garcia receives letter of commendation from Police Chief Ray Blackmore along with patrolman Lee Brown, president of the Peace Officers' Association. The men shake hands awkwardly afterwards. Garcia was honored for his attempt to stop an armed robbery suspect as he fled the scene of the crime on March 22nd. Reel 2: Segment 1 (sound): Former U.S. Chief of Protocol Lloyd Hand, now seeking Democratic nomination for California Lt. Governor, rejects accusations of carpetbagging. Segment 2 (silent): San Jose firefighters fight structure fire at 26th Street and San Fernando, an abandoned building and barn. The names Childs and Cook can be seen on two of the men's uniforms. Segment 3 (silent): Engineer and inventor Buckminster Fuller winds up his 2-month stay as San Jose State's distinguished scholar in residence with a free lecture at Civic Auditorium, titled "San Jose The Bay Area and the World of Tomorrow." Shots of sandwich board advertising "Buckminster Fuller San Jose Tomorrow in Fuller's View" and interior shots of Fuller on stage in Civic Auditorium. Segment 4 (sound): Woman explains the benefits of signing up for Medicaire, and says the next enrollment will not come until fall of 1967, and rates may be higher.
