Reel 1: Segment 1 (sound): Interview with Republican Assemblyman William Bagley, who is part of an effort to tear away the shroud of "ultra-conservatism" attached to Ronald Reagan. Bagley says the charge that Reagan is in the pocket of the John Birch Society is false. The reporter asks why Reagan has not disavowed them. Bagley says he thinks Reagan is just being consistent; Reagan said he would not disavow anyone, so he isn't. But Bagley says he knows of no Birch supporters in the campaign. The reporter asks about confirmed reports that Birch supporters are heavy contributors to Reagan's campaign, but Bagley says you could turn that around and find heavy "leftos" on Brown's list of supporters. Reel 2 (sound): Reporter Frank Gorin at the San Jose Civic Auditorium, to report on a trade exhibition of electronic business machines. Multiple shots of different types of office equipment and computerized business machines. Gorin reads from his script, ending with a joke where he says, "This is Frank Gorin reporting from San Jose...from San Jose...from San Jose...from San Jose...from San Jose..." as though he is a robot stuck on a loop. Segment 2 (color, silent): Dr. Vernon Rossow of the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View is seen testing his theories about tornadoes in the laboratory. Rossow has theorized that tremendous electrical energy in cloud formations builds up to create electrostatic fields; he's testing this by creating small tornadoes in order to create a possible diffusion for tornadoes. Reel 3: Reel 4: Reel 5: Segment 1 (silent): Earl Sears murder trial jury selection for the re-trial, in courtroom of Judge Robert Cassin. Potential jurors are seen entering the courtroom, Earl Sears and his attorney sit at table, prosecuting attorney Jack Schatz speaks. Segment 2 (sound): Interview with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Orville Freeman, in Monterey after a visit to Stockton. Freeman comments on California growers moving operations to Mexico; cost of food; farm prices. He says that the mechanization of harvest and more productive labor is on balance giving better results. Farm prices have lagged in the past, but have recently been improving. He doubts that the labor situation has contributed to decisions of large food producers to go to Mexico. Segment 1 (silent): San Jose Airport Commission meeting or news conference, including Jim Nissen, Bob Clark, and Steve Clausman, in which they announced that United Airlines had filed a request to operate out of San Jose. Segment 2 (sound): Interview with San Jose State College athletic director Bob Bronzan about efforts to expand Spartan Stadium. Both the college and the City of San Jose want to expand the stadium to attract larger teams as well as a pro football team. Bronzan says San Jose State is in favor of it as long as their program is protected. Once Spartan Stadium is expanded, it could be used by other high school, college and pro teams. He is asked how State will be protected if a pro football team comes, and Bronzan says that he means their schedule needs to be protected. Since pro football generally plays on Sundays, he believes it would not be an issue. Segment 3 (silent): Golfers on a course practicing shots. According to the broadcast script, this is related to the "Mug Hunt" golf tournament in Reno, Nevada, and Lake Tahoe. "Featuring nine members of baseball's Hall of Fame, the Mug Hunt is played on two courses in Reno and one in Lake Tahoe....Playing in this tournament, only Joe DiMaggio of the Hall of Famers played golf to keep in contention. The Yankee Clipper hit a near par 75 to lead other Hall of Famers Dizzy Dean, Bill Dickey, Luke Appling, and Carl Hubble, to name a few." Segment 1 (silent + sound): University of California professor Joyce Kallgren, Vice-Chairman of the UC's Center for Chinese Studies, gives the keynote speech at the annual United Nations dinner to a large crowd. She is interviewed about whether China would be invited to join the United Nations, and says the future of Taiwan would be a difficult aspect. She's asked whether there is any chance of Formosa joining the mainland, and she answers in the negative. Segment 2 (sound): Interview with Assemblyman William Stanton, who comments on the tax assessor scandal in Santa Clara County. Stanton says he's not jumping on assessor Dwight Mathiesen because he might be a fall guy for the person who preceded him. He opposes government by appointment and thinks that assessors should be elected, and be a partisan election, so that people pay attention and have the opportunity to weigh in with issues. Segment 3 (sound): Republican Earle Crandall, running against William Stanton, also comments on the tax assessor scandal. He says he hopes the Board of Supervisors will continue audits to prevent further issues, and also to recoup lost taxes. He says we need to maintain good government.
