Reel 1: Segment 1 (color, silent): Footage from June 18, 1965, of the Titan 3C rocket launch from Cape Canaveral. Segment 2 (silent): Men in lobby of government building, milling around, chatting with each other. Segment 3 (silent): Traffic accident. Emergency personnel treating victims on stretchers, putting them into ambulances. The KNTV Channel 11 News car can be seen in the background. Segment 4 (silent + sound): Boat in the ocean that appears to be a combination of a barge and sailboat, with "Triton" written on the side. Several men aboard, waving at the camera. Next shot is of the men on a small beach, loading things into a U-haul. Interviewed by Monterey correspondent Dennis Rowedder. "Can you tell us about hitting the rocks and how the voyage ended?" "Well, it was a strange set of circumstances. The tuna fishermen told us the big storm is the first they'd seen in 20 years from the southwest. It was really a dandy. They had quite a time riding it the night before; we were in it 2 days. It was an onshore wind.." Reporter asks, "Did you have to swim ashore?" "No, we rode it right up on the rocks. We had a choice whether to jump off and try to save our scalps, or ride it." Cut back to shots of the boat in the ocean before the storm. Segment 2 (silent + sound): Silent footage of young man speaking to a man with glasses, smiling. They appear to be on a fruit ranch. The man with glasses is interviewed and says that the young man's father is unable to work, so they have written to the Selective Service Board to say he had 7 dependents. The appeal was denied. Cut to the young man on a tractor with forklift moving large crates marked "Cortese." The young man is then interviewed about the draft. "I really wanna go." "But what would happen to your family?" "Well, it would be hard on them. I earn about $600-700 a month and most of it goes to them. If I go it will be really hard on them. They say if I have to go I have to go. But I at least try to get a deferment until my father is well." "And your father is bed-ridden at this time?" "Yes, he's completely unable to work." Segment 3 (silent + sound): Silent footage of an older man seated in chair [believed to be Perry F. Eason of Redwood City]. The camera pans down to his left foot, and he unzips his tall boot to reveal a lace-up prosthetic. He is seated at a small table with another man, chatting. Then he is interviewed. "As soon as I raise money I'm going to Washington, if it costs me my life." "What will you do in Washington?" "I'm gonna take it to the [Senate?], and the VA, and to the White House, cause the President is in Commanding Chief and he is responsible for all of the government affairs." "How soon will that be?" "Well, just as soon as I can raise the money and able to make the trip. I tore loose 2 muscles this past month from scar tissue and the doctor ordered me off the truck. I cannot drive anything above a ton truck or car, and I have got to raise the money before I can go. I am going. I stand two changes: lose a leg or lose a life and it doesn't make much matter. I'm gonna go." [According to a San Jose Mercury News story dated June 16, 1966, Georgia veteran Eason fought in World War II and was injured in a train wreck while on leave, crushing his left foot and ankle.
