Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent): Two men in handcuffs being led by Sheriff's deputies through hallway, then out the front door of Santa Clara County Judicial building. Segment 2 (silent): Helicopter flying overhead of coastline. A small rowboat is onshore. An Asian woman is on the beach looking up at helicopter, with a small group of people. The helicopter might be searching for missing people in the ocean. Segment 3 (silent): Miss Bardahl U-40 hydroplane skimming across the ocean. A man waves a checkered flag from a tower on shore. The Bardahl craft pulls up to a crew who get on board, congratulating the driver. Close-up of the hydroplane. Segment 4 (silent): Fishing boats and other small craft docked in a small harbor. Man fires a starting gun and motorboats start to race. Other fishing boats are in the water. Camera pans to a handbill for the Pajaro Valley Rod and Gun Club Shark Derby: First prize fish - 10 hp Mercury Outboard Motor. Gate prize - 3.9 hp Mercury Outboard Motor. Cut to people looking at a fish on a scale [tiger shark?]. Shots of a pile of ray fish and other fish caught as crowd looks on. Reel 2: Segment 1 (sound): High ranking Air Force member in uniform [last name Gullano?] speaking about two pilots missing after taking off from [Moffett Field?]. "Last Friday at about 12:50, Major Smith and Captain McCormick took off in our UC3B headed for Nellis Air Force Base on a routine mission. At about 3:55 that afternoon they were due in. Nellis had not heard from them, so they made a routine check of the airport at Nellis to make certain the plane hadn't landed and not checked in. They didn't find it, and at 5:55, still not having heard from them, they reported to our operations office that they were presumed to be missing, and our operations officer along with our Navy pilots took off on a helicopter from Moffett, flew along their route from this end; an aircraft from Nellis flew from the other end in a search for the aircraft. At dusk they called off the mission, and on Saturday morning and on Sunday morning the Western Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Unit of Hamilton took over the search for the aircraft and on both days they've had approximately 50 aircraft looking. The search is still continuing today with approximately that number aircraft and will continue until the aircraft is found." Segment 2 (silent): Exterior shots of Moffett Field Chapel, and sign. Segment 3 (silent): U.S. Army tank with "Chug a Lug" tank gun in field, with a pile of missiles next to it. Private Montano fixing tips to the missiles. Reel 3: Segment 1 (silent): California Highway Patrol speaking to man near corner of Royal Drive and Los Padres Boulevard in Santa Clara. Camera pans to something on the ground. Segment 2 (silent): Meeting regarding bonds or budget. Segment 3 (sound): San Jose State College track coach Bud Winter talking about one of his team member's injuries [presumed to be Tommie Smith]. Says the doctors can't tell without cutting it open. If it's just a cramp, then he'll be okay to compete on Saturday [at NCAA Track & Field Championships]. If it's a strain, tear or rupture, it will take longer. He says that the athlete is too far away from us for us to know and he's waiting for a phone call. Segment 4 (silent): Track and field meet. [NCAA Track & Field Championships at Billy Hayes Track, University of Indiana Bloomington] Sprinters at finish line; relay race; shot put; more track events. One of the runners may be Tommie Smith. The scoreboard has a big "I" in the center and at various points in the film lists racers from Oregon, San Jose, USC, Kansas, Nebraska, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Ohio State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and Michigan. Reel 4: Segment 1 (sound): Continuation of interview that begins in Reel 5, with man speaking about American involvement in Vietnam. He is asked whether anti-war demonstrations are politically motivated. "Oh, definitely. They are politically motivated." Reporter asks, "Does the [?] government enjoy popular support from the people in Vietnam?" "Yes, I would say that the [?] government does generally enjoy popular support. Uh, you must recognize though that the Vietnamese peasants are organized on village lines. Their interests and their sphere of reference doesn't really go too much further than their own village or perhaps the district they live in. Their knowledge of what happens at the national level is mainly confined to the radio, and there aren't that many Vietnamese farmers who have radios." "What is the purpose of the program?" "Well, the purpose is to assist the Vietnamese people to win the revolution of modernization that they're in. If the U.S. along with the Vietnamese government can win for the people those things that they desire and modernizing process, if we can help them realize their revolution without the interference of communist powers, we will have removed the basis for the present conflict. What we need to do is develop social institutions, build schools, create good health practices, defeat illiteracy, set up land programs so that a farmer has a future... [film ends] Segment 2 (sound): Reporter interviewing two women [two of the "Napalm Ladies"] dressed for court, waiting outside in a hallway. "Are you nervous?" the reporter asks one of the women. "The most nervous part of the whole thing was deciding to do the act that we did. Once that decision was made then the rest was easy. In fact a great burden was lifted off my - " "Have any of you ladies ever been to court before?" reporter interrupts. "No. No, not even on a traffic ticket," the second woman answers. "You're not nervous?" the reporter asks her. "Has your attorney explained the maximum sentence if it goes against you?" "Yes," she says, "six months in jail." [The four women on trial were Joyce McLean, Beverly Farquharson, Lisa Kalvelage, and Aileen Hutchinson] Reel 5: Segment 1 (silent + sound): O'Connor Hospital in San Jose. A nurse attends to the bedside of a woman; close-up of monitor next to the bed, with oscilloscope. A contraption is then demonstrated that rotates someone in a bed without moving them from a prone position. Followed by interview with hospital administrator about the forecast increase in patients now that O'Connor is qualified as agent for Medicare. Hospital administrator says that he's not worried about overcrowding; they have special carts to attend to older Medicare patients with heart problems; special equipment for patients with orthopedic problems. O'Connor is the first hospital in Santa Clara County to qualify as an agent for Medicare, but he expects all of the County's hospitals to qualify. Segment 2 (sound): First part of interview with man speaking about attitudes towards U.S. involvement in Vietnam. He is asked "What is the feeling of Vietnamese towards American troops?" "Well, the Vietnamese population is generally pro-American in terms of our troops and our civilian efforts. They realize that their own forces are not adequate to deal with the present situation, and that the American forces are necessary. Of course, they don't want American presence there any longer than necessary, but contrary to what we may have seen on some of the TV shows recently that indicate anti-Americanism, this is not the general feeling of the population. It's more the attitude of interest groups who are trying to take power away from the present government..." Reel 6 (silent): Exterior of school buildings, campus, where there is a large, empty dirt area in between two of the buildings. A man with a wheelbarrow is seen. Cut to a man in an office with an adding machine behind him. Cut back to a work crew at the school - they appear to be young people in their teens or early 20s. Soon a trellis appears, with plants in pots, and then the whole area is transformed into a pleasant garden with a seating area.
