KNTV Channel 11 News Reels November 2, 1965

Description: Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news on October 22, 1966. The accompanying script, read by the newscaster, provides details of the stories and completes the broadcast, and can be obtained from History San Jose. Segment 1 (silent): "Meet Your Candidates" night inside the new Mayfield Mall in Mountain View, sponsored by the League of Women Voters. Shots of children seated on the floor, political campaign posters on the walls, a woman in her League of Women Voters boater hat. Segment 2 (sound): Democratic Congressional candidate George Leppert, at the "Meet Your Candidates" night, proposing a plan to stop bombing North Vietnam in exchange for release of American prisoners of war. "Since the start of the war, almost 400 planes have been downed over North Vietnam. There are hundreds and hundreds of American prisoners being held there. It is not to the advantage of the North Vietnamese and it is not to the advantage of the United States for our men to be suffering in a foreign prison. I propose that the U.S. immediately stop the bombing of North Vietnam and give the North Vietnamese one month to release our prisoners. If after a month they haven't responded, then the U.S. is free to resume bombing." Segment 3 (sound): After a brief clip of kids playing in a band at the same "Meet Your Candidates" night, Republican State Senator Clark Bradley speaks to camera. "We have some very basic issues [in the campaign] -- cost of government, conservation, some of the propositions.." Segment 4 (silent): Young folk dancers are seen getting ready to perform, and performing on stage as part of the United Nations festival at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds. One group appears to be from the Netherlands, wearing clogs; the other group on stage appear to be Scottish or Irish folk dancers. Segment 5 (silent): Artificial ski slope being created on El Camino Real in Palo Alto, with billboard, "Here -- Ski Lessons on Snow -- Snow Hills." Shots of snow blowing on a wooden ramp, ice block being loaded into the snow blower, skiers skiing down the ramp. Broadcast script reads, "Today's skiing was a prelude to the instruction and practice officially scheduled to begin next Saturday. Provided the school can find some more of those huge ice cubes. Maybe the instructors can raid the Jolly Green Giants liquor cabinet. (Note: the last sentence is optional and is to be used at the announcer's discretion.)" 10/22/66 A-C 629
