Description: Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news on November 1, 1966. The broadcast script for this date has not survived. Reel 1: Segment 1 (sound): Interview with young man explaining the change in how football bowl games will operate. "It's a complete change from the current system. The State Athletic Committee will control all the playoffs. In the past all they've done is approve the financial plan, and the service clubs have done the running of the plan. But junior colleges have had little say about it. Now they will completely control the whole playoff system...Junior colleges will promote their own playoffs, and they money will go back to junior colleges..." Segment 2 (sound): Interview with woman who is heading up a boycott of grocery stores to protest prices. "We intend to keep our organization on tap and we'll start our boycott again." Reporter says that Reagan has said that housewives shouldn't boycott stores because they won't accomplish anything; they should take their complaints to the federal government which sets the prices. The woman replies, "Well...how does Mr. Reagan expect us to reach the federal government? We've tried everything seemingly, and we don't get anything done. This is one way we know we can get something done..." She says that they've already got 2,000 women already without any publicity, and she expects to double that number by November 15th. Segment 3 (sound): Interview with older woman, who is an author who writes about civil rights. She says that there has been a great improvement in books, especially in illustrations, of Negro history and Negro character. She's asked, being an author from Birmingham, Alabama, how her books have been received. "With some reluctance. Until I began writing specifically on the subject of civil rights, they were very well accepted. But there's been a great falling off, although they are still used in the library..." Reel 2: Segment 1 (sound): Interview with Alan Cranston on a number of topics, including property tax and whether some government roles should be appointments. First he's asked about Democratic party leadership, and he carefully says that Governor Brown is the titular leader, and Warren is the Chair - he himself is a leader, but not THE leader. He repeats his argument that property taxes are the most unfair tax and that people in California, including farmers, can't keep up with rising rates. He argues that you have to have some people who are appointed in civil service, not elected. Segment 2 (sound): People with placards along busy road in Santa Clara near the City of Santa Clara Civic Center Park, urging people to vote no on Proposition E. Interviews with a number of them, who all say that they oppose the idea of evicting people and taking land unjustly. Reel 3: Segment 1 (silent): San Jose City Council meeting. Mayor Ron James is seen, with a "Mayfair Study Area" plan behind him on the wall. Segment 2 (sound): Reporter inside the Santa Clara County Tax Collector's Office, where people are paying their property taxes. He says that now is that time of year when property bills arrive in the mail, and as usual, they've gone up again this year, by as much as $70-80/household. He interviews County Assessor Dwight Mathiesen about where the additional funds go. Mathiesen says he has no control over this, but mostly the additional funds are going towards the cost of welfare, and the cost of new school buildings for a growing population. He says he doesn't know what percentage goes to welfare, but about half of the additional money is going towards schools.
