Reel 1: Segment 1 (sound): Monterey correspondent Dennis Rowedder interviews an Episcopalian priest [or bishop] about the church's stance on abortion. "The church has historically brushed aside this topic in the past. Does your appointment mean a fresh approach?" The priest answers, "The Diocese and Council of the Episcopal Diocese of California has twice affirmed this position that our abortion laws are in drastic need of change. We're having a service at Grace Cathedral tomorrow night, a service of witness on behalf of these physicians who have been subpoenaed for performing therapeutic abortions in cases of rubella, or German measles. One of them is a vestryman of one of our San Francisco parishes and our Diocese has quite definitely taken a very strong stand that the abortion laws should be revised so that they could include provisions of therapeutic abortions for victims of rape, incest and things like German measles." Rowedder, "In other words, to make it legal --" [End of clip] Segment 2 (silent): San Jose City Council meeting with packed auditorium, for hearing on the ordinance banning parking of boats and trailers in front yards and driveways. Speakers at podium, audience enthusiastically clapping, members of audience standing and raising their arms in agreement. Followed by shots of recreational vehicles, trailers, boats and campers parked in residential driveways. Segment 3 (silent): Shot of cars driving down a residential street lined with Craftsman-style houses. Sign on house (street number 298) for Building F, San Jose State College Engineering Manpower Research Project, Division of Engineering. A woman and children walk down the sideway and turn to enter the side of the house. Another sign reads, "Human Learning Project San Jose State College." Exterior of No. 298 again. Shot of sidewalk with people approaching from distance. Reel 2: Segment 1 (silent): U.S. Marines trailer carrying a U.S. Air Force Titan III rocket, parked in what looks like a parking lot. The rocket is extended vertically for display as a serviceman chats with a blond woman dressed in a bathing suit. The woman stands next to a sign that reads, "Titan III Rocket and Military Defense Units presented here June 29 & 30 by the San Jose Jaycees." Segment 2 (sound): Interview with [San Jose or Santa Clara County] Farm Labor Office representative, who is in extreme close-up, speaking about shortage of apricot pickers. "They've been having trouble with market price and they've been holding off, and all of a sudden the weather pushed the 'cots upon them, and now they're faced with an extreme shortage of labor and they're trying to get these 'cots off the trees." "What is your office doing about this?" asks reporter. "Our office is doing everything we can to reach the public, the picking public in general, especially concentrating on reaching youth at this present moment." "What kind of people do you need?" "We need all kinds of pickers. We need men and women for the fruit trees, and we particularly would like to interest the youth in both apricot picking and apricot cutting." "Are most of these jobs local?" "The jobs are all around San Jose. This critical area right now is An Jose proper." "Are the jobs long-term jobs, or..." "The jobs right now could last 2 or 3 weeks." "Where should potential workers go?" "We would like to have them come to the Farm Labor Office at 1277 North 15th Street. They can call there for information first if they desire, but we would prefer to have them come to the office." The rest of the film is silent footage of pickers in the apricot orchard, pulling fruit off the trees and dumping the apricots into a Del Monte fruit lug. Reel 3: Segment 1 (sound): Interview with a man in an open shirt, holding a pipe. He says, "There were no drinks whatsoever served at the party. We were doing only what is done in every social club, every political club, and every church in Santa Clara County, and perhaps throughout the country. There was no violation of the law. My feeling is that the arrest was part of a pattern of political intimidation. These raids have taken place where students who are active with civil rights have parties, and where students active in the peace movement have parties. I see a clear pattern, and I'm sure we're going to document a clear pattern of political intimidation through the use of these alcohol laws." [Reporter asks question that isn't included on film] "It was after the arrest that I did this. The treatment inside the jail was exactly the same as the treatment inside the Greenwood Mississippi jail, and there was no difference, despite the smiling faces of the police and their efforts to be friendly. In one instance, I saw one man manhandled, and without commenting, the officers that did it came over to explain to me that this was not police brutality. When three 6-foot policemen manhandle a 5-foot-4 Mexican-American, that's police brutality. He didn't attack anybody inside a police station. There are several instances that occurred in the short time I was in the jail which are clearly police harassment, police brutality, and the kind of thing that we have to stop, because it is exactly what goes on in the deep South." Reporter asks, "Was this harassment or brutality of people involved in your arrest?" Pause. "Yes, there was a degree of it, there was a specific incident which will be brought out in court." "Do you expect to file counter charges?" "I can't speak on the substance of the case, I don't know what will occur. I do know, though, that the police department has perhaps bitten off more than it can chew." Segment 2 (silent): Appears to be a Santa Clara County Supervisors meeting or hearing, with several well-dressed speakers and a small audience. Reel 4: Segment 1 (silent): Group of men entering a courtroom; attorneys huddling in conversation; jury seated in chairs. Segment 2 (silent): Short clip of a baseball game at night, likely San Jose Bees. Segment 3 (sound): Man interviewed in his office about upcoming basketball clinic at San Jose City College Men's Gymnasium. "We're pleased to announce that the participants in the clinic will be players like Tom Meschery, and the new rookie choice Joe Ellis. Also Guy Rodgers is going to be down for the clinic, of course. Bill Sharman the new coach for the [San Francisco] Warriors will be down for the clinic, and we feel this is going to be quite an attraction for the boys and people in San Jose." Reel 5 (sound): Santa Clara County Hospital spokesman being interviewed about a rate increase. "I don't think that is quite correct. County Hospital has one rate for all rooms -- $38/day -- whether there's one or five beds. Other hospitals in the county vary rate by the number of beds, and on Friday the rates at others will range from $37.50 to $45.50." Reporter asks whether the rate increase can be attributed to Medicare. "No, the present rate increase can in no way be attributed to Medicare. It is caused by two factors...lower occupancy since the Casey AB5 bill went into effect, and the other is beginning with this year we are now bearing the cost of those County services which are performed for us by County government. For example, we do not do any purchasing for the hospital. This is all done by the County Purchasing Department, and necessarily some portion of the cost of that department occurs because of the service they've given us. Heretofore, this was not a part of the County Hospital costs. Beginning in March, however, the state government said we might include this in our costs. These are the two reasons for our increase to take effect July 1st, and let me repeat they are not in any way related to the inception of Medicare." Reel 6 (sound): Begins with ride-along inside a California Highway Patrol car as it pulls over another vehicle. The officer gets out and walks over to the driver's side. KNTV reporter Bob Marsden then enters the frame and begins speaking in front of the car that has been pulled over, as the conversation between CHP officer and driver continues in the background. Marsden explains, "The results of seven years of CHP study and experimentation in highway and law enforcement are now being applied for the CHP in a study program dubbed 'Operation 500.' 52 men have already arrived at the local CHP office to begin training under the program. The statewide plan calls for 500 additional officers, provided in the 1965-66 budget. Of this, 301 will be deployed elsewhere in the Bay Area, and 67 here in Santa Clara County. The deployment will be concentrated on selected thoroughfares, but the two main ones being Highway 101 and Highway 17. I asked CHP information officer Henry Rosenschwag what was involved in the training of such a force." Rosenschwag explains the training and says it will be completed by September. Marsden continues, "The program will be completed in 1967, concentrating on six major thoroughfares throughout the state. Through these deployments, the Highway Patrol hopes to have a substantial effect on traffic accidents, while gaining valuable additional information on future manpower assignments."
