Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent): Men speaking to small room full of people around conference tables. According to script, "A major break-through for the minority groups in San Jose was scored this afternoon at the monthly meeting of a subcommittee of the Police Advisory Board. A measure was passed, at the request of subcommittee chairman Dr. John D'harris, that would provide for a hearing of all complaints against the police department. The measure stipulated that a seven-member committee be established to serve as a complaint receiving group. All complaints deemed legitimate by this group would in turn be presented to the subcommittee by the individual involved for appropriate action. In other action, the two major minority groups...the Negroes and the Mexican-Americans...were each granted two positions on the Police Advisory Board. The measure dealing with the hearing of individual complaints came after much debate. The other action came as part of a ten-point recommendation approved at the last meeting of the Police Advisory Board." Segment 2 (silent): Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus being interviewed at the Bing Crosby Golf Tournament. Per the script, "The $104,000 Bing Crosby Golf Tournament gets underway tomorrow on the Monterey Peninsula...most of the golfers were on the three courses today playing practice rounds...I talked to one of the favorites in the 25th annual clambake...Arnold Palmer...Arnie goes after his first Crosby win, tomorrow morning at 10:33, at Cypress Point. Last year's leading money winner Jack Nicklaus will be making his first tournament appearance of the year in the Crosby. Nicklaus teamed with Palmer in today's practice round, and had this to say about the tournament..." Reel 2: Segment 1 (silent): Exterior shots of building at 1654 The Alameda, San Jose, after being defaced with white paint. Script reads, "A 25-year-old San Jose man is being held in Santa Clara County Jail for some unauthorized painting done last night at the San Jose Selective Service Office. Robert A. Miller of 90 South 13th Street is charged with malicious mischief and as yet has not posted bail. Miller, who works as a lab technician, was picked up by San Jose Police about 3:30 this morning at the Selective Service Office at 1654 The Alameda. He was apparently perturbed about receiving his draft notice. When police arrived on the scene, Miller was in the process of painting a building directory in front of the office building, covering the listing of the draft board. He also painted the large green letters W-H-Y on the sidewalk in front of the building's entrance, and again on the large window adjacent to the entrance. Miller also broke two of the Selective Service Office windows during the process of venting his wrath. Draft Board officials said that Miller was not registered with the San Jose Board." Segment 2 (silent): Ceremony involving naval cadets. According to script, "Rear Admiral Dennis C. Lyndon, the Commander of the Naval Reserve Training Command, from Omaha, Nebraska, inspected the personnel and facilities of the U.S. Naval Reserve Training Center in San Jose tonight. Before inspecting the ranks, the admiral presented a reserve meal, and two promotions...Chief David Hite was presented the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. Chief Hite, who has20 years service, is an Assistant Administrative Officer...Rating Group Supervisor Wesley Boyer was promoted to Chief...along with Supply Assistant Donal Baker...Following the promotions Admiral Lyndon and his staff inspected the Naval Reserve Construction Battalion, Division 1214. The San Jose Naval Reserve Training Center is commanded by Lieutenant Commander I. B. Dement." Segment 3 (silent): Superior Court Courtroom No. 12, Judge Peckham presiding. Shots of jury and judge inside courtroom. Script reads, "The 1965 Grand Jury was dismissed today with words of thanks from the judges of the Santa Clara County Superior Court. In ceremonies this afternoon the outgoing grand jury formally wound up its year of work--which included the hearing of criminal cases as well as studies of various government functions in the county. Judge Homer Thompson -- Presiding Judge for 1965 -- thanked the panel for its contribution to an important part of the American system of government. He said the panel was truly an outstanding grand jury and had proven worthy of the trust placed with the jurors. Current presiding Judge -- Robert Peckham, in whose chambers the ceremony was held -- added his thanks with special mention to Foreman Ralph Dethlefson, Foreman Protem Laddy H.
