Script reads, "In other sports, in boxing Irish Bobby Scanlon will meet 6th ranked Luis Molina, in a welterweight bout, tomorrow night at the Civic Auditorium. This afternoon I talked to Scanlon about the fight..." Segment 2 (sound): Interview with Dr. Jacob Stone, in lab coat, who says professional services have always been highly rated at County Hospital, but they want to provide improved physical facilities, which will come from both physical and staff reorganization. Script reads, "County Supervisors were urged to take a closer look at County Hospital this afternoon, with an idea toward making the facility self-supporting. The advent of Medicare has changed indigent patients into paying patients, with the freedom to choose hospitals. The Chairman of the County Health and Welfare Commission, Dr. Jacob Stone, has urged facilities at County Hospital be reorganized to enable the hospital to compete with others. We asked him if this meant County Hospital has been providing second-rate service to impoverished patients." Reel 2: Segment 1 (sound): Interview with Phillip Buskirk about improving the Santa Clara County Economic Opportunities Commission and whether the Board of Supervisors Blue Ribbon Committee is helpful. Buskirk says that general change will be in the direction of new program development and examining staff roles. Script reads, "...In other news of the Economic Opportunities Commission, newly appointed director of the EOC Phillip Buskirk said that he thinks that the local program could become as big a program as there is in the nation. He talked about his new duties with Channel 11's Bob Marsden..." Segment 2 (sound): Santa Clara County Health Officer Dr. W. Edwin Turner explains new family planning program and says "these will be available to any woman.. we will hold educational facilities and provide birth control.." Story reads, "The Santa Clara County Welfare Department announced today that a county-wide family planning program will get underway next month. The program, which will include educational sessions on birth control, population problems and public health, was given approval by the Board of Supervisors last month. County Health Officer Dr. W. Elwin Turner was named by the board to plan such a program. We talked with Turner about the new welfare activity.." Segment 3 (silent): Shots of a long building surrounded by countryside, roof of building, interior [likely klystrons], computers and control stations. Cut to interview with Richard Neal, standing in front of architectural plans in the background, who says, "How does this benefit mankind? It helps us understand the basic building blocks of nature." Script reads, "Scientists at Stanford's Linear Accelerator are jubilant tonight following this weekend's first successful shot of a stream of electrons a distance of two miles. Construction is still in progress at the accelerator site. Another building is planned for further studies with electrons. Saturday afternoon, scientists powered a stream of electrons thru the two mile length of the accelerator. The feat, though planned, was still unexpected as far as its ease was concerned. The Stanford Accelerator is the largest in the world. At full power, it is expected to produce energies of 20 billion electron volts. It will give scientists a greater ability to study an atomic nucleus. We talked with Dr. Richard Neal, one of the linear accelerator's associate directors, about the tests..." Reel 3: Segment 1 (sound): Interview with Salinas Strawberries' Clancy Wilson in front of strawberry field, who says they are losing 30,000 crates a day in harvest due to the lack of workers, even with the braceros. Segment 2 (silent): Extended shots of migrant farm workers arriving by truck, walking into strawberry fields. A man stands in front of the group and talks to them, shows them a strawberry. Shots of laborers picking strawberries, putting them into crates labeled "Growers Frozen Foods." Script reads, "Most of the 1000 braceros approved by the Federal government to work in Salinas strawberry fields have arrived from Mexico and began work today. The Mexican nationals began arriving as early as Saturday and spokesmen for Salinas strawberries say the full complement of 1000 should be busy with the harvest by tomorrow. Approval by Labor Secretary Willard Wirtz for the importation of farm workers has touched off a storm of controversy among local Mexican-American leaders who say sufficient domestic labor is available to harvest the crop.
