Description: Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. Includes national, local, and sports coverage. The broadcast script for this date has not survived. Reel 1: Segment 1 (sound): Physician being interviewed about Medicare implementation. He appears to represent Santa Clara County physicians. He says it's impossible to predict what the implementation is going to look like in terms of problems, delays, overcrowding, etc. because there are too many variables. Physicians are dedicated to providing the best care regardless. Segment 2 (silent + sound): Footage of man entering courtroom, jury entering courtroom and sitting down. An attorney with wavy hair wearing a bowtie is interviewed. He says he intends to call attention to the severity of the crime and the nature of the murder that was committed, and he believes the jury should return the death penalty. Reel 2 (silent + sound): Disabled veteran Perry F. Eason of Redwood City intends to drive a delivery van to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness for his cause. A friend of his will be driving because Eason has been told not to drive for long periods by his doctor. The vehicle bears a painted message on the side and back: "Perry F. Eason 100' 1 Disabled Vet But Rated Only 40' 1 by VA. Why? I Fought for Freedom. VA Unfair to Perry F. Eason. Why? Washington or Die." Eason says he's being financed by someone in San Mateo County. [According to a San Jose Mercury News story dated June 16, 1966, Georgia veteran Eason fought in World War II and was injured in a train wreck while on leave, crushing his left foot and ankle. The Social Security Administration rated Eason 100 percent disabled, but the VA said he was only 40 percent disabled, and he intended to go to Washington, D.C. to plead his case] Reel 3: Segment 1 (sound): Man in office being interviewed. Begins, "It will mean the immediate laying off of thousands of students all of whom have been screened and determined to need summer employment to continue their education.." He says the layoff is for an indefinite period, meaning that the 65 plus community agencies that are depending on student employment have no way of knowing how long they'll be unavailable. This will cause many agencies to lose faith in the program, through no fault of the students or the college. Segment 2 (silent): O'Connor Hospital administrator and small group of people, including a nun, seated at a table with mid-century atomic age wall paper and clock on the wall behind them. This may be related to nurses' pay conditions, or Medicare implementation. Reel 4: Segment 1 (silent): Shots of hospital administrative employees working, filling out forms, helping people with forms, working with rotating file card system. Segment 2 (sound): Interview with man from the Santa Clara County Welfare Department, responding to questions about welfare program. Questions from the reporter are based on a recent survey of public opinion. The man says the County has been training people in literacy for several years because people need to be able to read and write in order to work. Reporter asks if there's any truth to the complaint of unwed mothers having illegitimate children to live off of welfare payments. The representative soundly debunks this as a myth. He also objects to the public opinion that some men would rather live off of unemployment payments with their feet up at home rather than working, and explains the work assignment program. Reel 5 (silent): Planes lined up on tarmac at Moffett Field. Servicemen and U.S. Navy seamen disembark from the plane, some meeting family members with hugs.
