Description: Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news. Includes national, local, and sports coverage. The broadcast script for this date has not survived. Reel 1 (sound): Man being interviewed who says there needs to be a clear concept and understanding of the role of deputy, and clear lines of communication between the area service center personnel and the deputy for operations office. He doesn't feel that this exists. He references Santa Clara County's war on poverty. Reel 2 (sound): Pan Am jumbo jets on the tarmac at San Francisco Airport. Cut to young man walking down corridor to the terminal where he is swarmed with reporters and guided to a microphone stand for a press conference. [He appears to have impersonated another soldier to take his place so that the soldier could return home from Vietnam] "I've told it 100 times now. Don't you read the UPI releases?" he says with a wry smile. "How did they discover you?" a reporter asks. "Oh, they discovered me because they sent one man out and two weeks later a different man came back and reported in for him." "Are you convinced you did the right thing?" "Yes I am." "What are your plans for going back?" "I'm working with some people that are going to see if they can utilize me in a civilian position here." "What kind of position?" "Call it a social worker." "If you had the chance would you do it all over again?" "Yes, I would." "Why?" "Because I believe in the reasons I did it for." Reporters press him for more details, and he rolls his eyes slightly. "I did it for one thing, for the person I changed places with, to help him get a hardship discharge, because I believed his story, that he was needed at home. And I did it secondly because I felt I should be over in the Army fighting, and thirdly, I felt I should show my support for President Johnson's war on Vietnam policies." "What's your attitude towards those demonstrating against those policies?" "I'm demonstrating against them." "David, do you consider yourself a hawk or a dove?" "Well, rather a hawk than both." "How did the GI's treat you when they found out you were a volunteer/" "The Army treated me wonderful...the GI's were fascinated." 7/2/66 A 519; 7/2/66 B 519; 7/2/66 A 519; 7/2/66 B 519
