Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent): Ribbon cutting at medical building in San Jose at 14th Street and Santa Clara, across from the San Jose Hospital. Script reads, "A ribbon was snipped opening a new three-million dollar medical building in San Jose...19-year old Charlene Dallas, Miss California, and 20-year old Sandy Germaine, Miss San Jose State, helped with the ribbon cutting. San Jose Mayor Ron James donned a stethoscope for the occasion, but there was speculation he was really plugged into the World Series." Reel 2: Segment 2 (sound): Interview with Dr. Brooks Lockhart, Chairman of the Finance Committee of the California School Boards' Association, about the plan to establish a state-wide teacher's salary schedule coupled with a change in school financing. He explains the main feature of the proposal is the creation of a statewide teacher pay schedule. This will ease the tax burden, and shift the burden from the taxpayer to the state, leading to improvement in general. Once it's approved by the executive board, he says they'll draft a bill and seek an author to introduce it after the November elections. Segment 3 (sound): Interview with San Jose State football coach Harry Anderson, about the physical condition of the team ahead of their game with Cal. Segment 1 (sound): Interview with British author and scholar John A. Hawgood, at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga. The reporter leads up to his question by saying that San Jose has been criticized as having no personality and practically no image. He asks Hawgood if, in his studies of California, has he encountered anything to contradict this image? Hawgood says he was disappointed when he visited back in 1950 to find no center, and there seems to be even less center and more on the periphery than before. "I'm afraid it does deserve it's name -- Northern California's Los Angeles. The only other city comparable is Phoenix, which has been called the Los Angeles of Arizona. I wish that San Jose had kept some of its Spanish-Mexican and early American features." The reporter asks what can be done to save San Jose's personality? "Well, so much has gone, even the old Alameda and private homes. The best thing to do is focus on being a modern city, with a new modern center." Segment 4 (silent): Santa Clara University Broncos football practice. Script reads, "A junior at Santa Clara University is the Bronco player of the week. Mike Doherty, from San Jose, who plays all defense and is second in the fullback slot, was named the player of the week for his outstanding defensive work in the Bronco upset of San Francisco State last Saturday night..." Segment 2 (silent + sound): Silent footage of a Minibus pulling driving through the street, passengers inside the bus, and getting on and off. Interview with Joe Sullivan, San Jose City Superintendent for off-street parking, about mini-bus uses in San Jose. He says they would be used to remove walking distances in downtown area when crowds come down for big sales, or conventions.
