Description: Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news on September 22, 1966. Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent): Santa Clara University football player, Number 44, faces the camera, followed by footage of the team practicing. Script reads, "A senior at Santa Clara University has been named the Santa Clara football player of the week...Gary Filizetti...a halfback and co-captain of the Broncos was named on the basis of his performance against the University of California at Davis last Saturday night. The 5 foot 11 inch 196 pound halfback is one of two players on the Bronco squad who actually comes from Santa Clara...Saturday night in the 34 to 7 win over the Cal Aggies, Filizetti carried the ball from scrimmage 7 times and picked up 78 yards for a 10.1 yard per carry average...the durable senior also caught 6 passes for 136 yards...over half of the yardage gained in the air..." Segment 2 (silent): Pickets outside the San Jose Shopping News offices: "A Union Town Has No Room for Scabs and Finks! Scabs Must Go!" and "San Jose News Imported Strikebreakers!" Two police officers speak with a couple of the men outside the office. Script reads, "About 25 members of local printing trades unions stormed the place this morning shortly before 10 a.m. and set up what threatened to be a pretty active picket line. More than once during the day San Jose police were called to calm the lads. First it was because the picketers were blocking off the sidewalk in front of the news building at 77 South Third Street. Normal foot traffic could not get through. After that problem was solved police learned there were several non-union workers inside the building. They wanted to come out but were afraid of passing through the picket lines. Our photographer couldn't get in the building and the workers never did come out. According to union officials the dispute was raised because because the company had hired non-union help in place of organized labor." Segment 3 (silent): Footage of a small crew pulling a large fan into a walnut orchard, which blows leaves off of the nuts on the ground. The nuts are then scooped up by a hand-pushed harvester. Shots of the walnuts inside the harvest machine. Script reads, "It is now possible to cut the cost of walnut harvesting by 75%...The first device is a leaf blower. It's a five-foot fan costing 275 dollars. When turned on, it blows away leaves from the base of walnut trees. The nuts can be easily picked. The second is a walnut harvester. The machine moves with a 3-foot swath, picking up walnuts and tossing them into twin bins. Most dirt clods are expelled through thru a mesh grid. The two machines are designed for small farmers with less than 50 acres of trees. The picker, costing 800 dollars, lets one man average 120 sacks of nuts per eight hour day. A good hand picker can average 35 sacks..." Segment 4 (silent): Award dinner, where athlete Tommie Smith receives an award. Shots of the attendees, including several Black men, a speaker at the podium, Smith standing to receive his award, and then admiring the award statue. Script reads, "Tribute was paid the San Jose State track and field team tonight at the San Jose Elks Club. It was Portuguese night for the membership as well as track recognition night. Specifically the night was in honor of the world's fastest human...Tommie Smith...the young man who ran the world's fastest 220 yards, or 200 meters. The San Jose State track star holds the world record of 19.5 seconds...five seconds faster than any human ever ran the distance before. The speedster, who is from Lemoore, was lauded as a great competitor and an ideal person. Track coach Bud Winters said he's never seen a man who is such a great athlete and diplomat as he performed during a summer European tour. San Jose State President Dr. Robert Clark and Dr. Brozman, Athletic Director, said Smith is the finest person they've ever known in athletics and predicted great things for Smith's entire life. Smith received awards from Chamber of Commerce President Jay Gibson, Councilman Robert Welsh, on behalf of the City of San Jose, and a trophy from the Spartan Spikester president Miles Harrington." Reel 2: Segment 1 (sound): Paul Lockwood interview with San Jose City Manager A. P. "Dutch" Hamann at the San Jose Airport, on his way to visit the Swift meat packing plant in Rockport, Missouri. Hamann comments that they want to visit a Swift plant where rendering takes place in order to judge the smells and gases. Most meatpacking plants are the same, except if they include the rendering process, where he wants to see how they handle gases, smokes, etc. Script reads, "Dreams of landing a new Swift company meat packing plant are leading yet another group of San Jose officials around by the nose again tonight..." Segment 2 (sound): Interview with Santa Clara County delinquency prevention officer Willie Ellison. Script reads, "The continued upward spiral of juvenile crime may be curtailed by a new program aimed at snuffing out potential delinquency. Approved by the Board of Supervisors, the project will provide direct services to pre-delinquents in their own neighborhoods...." Ellison comments that they've received more referrals for drug use in the county this year than in the past 5 years, and more so from the middle classes for LSD and marijuana use. He says that the areas where the most drug use is happening are not in the users own neighborhoods, but they are being influenced by outside influences and the places where young people hang out and get together. Reel 3 (silent): Footage of the San Jose City Council's sex education in schools hearings. Footage of multiple speakers, including an extended speech by one man [Judge George Barnett]. Script reads, "For the second straight night, the San Jose City Council Chambers drew a packed house, probably better than local theatres did. The subject smacked of theatre fare. Call this feature Sex and the Schoolboy...Most of the three hour meeting was devoted to school superintendents, but parents, both pro and con, managed to make their views known...Superior Court Judge George Barnett of the Family Court was outspoken in his endorsement of the plan..." Reel 4 (silent + sound): Silent footage of a mixture of contemporary, period, and tribal art pieces inside the Walter Mole Gallery in Los Gatos, with shots of the gallery exterior. Followed by sound interview with John Hunter. Script reads, "Modern art and period furniture just don't mix...usually. But in a Los Gatos art gallery, they are mixed, and very well. The place is the Walter Mole Gallery, featuring a display called Inaugural 66. The building is part of an old hotel built shortly after the turn of the century. Inside are modern paintings along with rare antique furniture. We talked with gallery publicist John Hunter about the show.." Hunter explains that this is a unique exhibit because they've gathered this mix of objects and put them together in one gallery. The fine furnishings enhance the contemporary art and provide a warmth and character to the setting. He refers to one piece as Yoruba tribal art. He also says that most galleries cannot afford to mount this type of exhibition. Reel 5: Segment 1 (sound): KNTV reporter Dick Currier stands in front of the sign for San Jose State's Spartan City married couples apartments at 1253 South Seventh Street, San Jose, and says that San Jose State wants to tear down the apartments and replace them with a maintenance yard. The married students are not happy, and have complained to the administration that they will be unable to afford housing otherwise and most will have to drop out. The school says they have no plans to replace the student housing. Currier then stands in front of the San Jose State housing offices and says that officials have refused to speak to KNTV. Segment 2 (silent): Shots of suitcases on the ground at Stanford University, as freshman arrive for fall semester. One of the suitcases bears a SFO luggage tag. Students walk down the sidewalks carrying bags of groceries, and belongings. Shots of cars parked in the parking lots, and one limousine driver opening the door for his passenger. Reel 6: Segment 1 (sound): KNTV reporter Dick Currier reports on freshman week at Stanford University. He reports that 1285 new students are arriving a week before the other 11,000 students are scheduled to arrive. A year of unrest is expected, with a new student leader who plans to hold more demonstrations and demand more student involvement. Currier asks incoming students what they think and whether they will participate. Their responses range from caution, worries about being expelled, worries about alumni reactions, and agreement with the need for more student involvement. Currier ends the segment in front of the billboard for Stanford Football, saying that no matter what, the students will have a lot of competing interests for their attention. Segment 2 (silent): Shots of a two-story apartment complex with laundry lines, where two mothers are pushing their young children on a swing set.
