Description: Original camera footage edited for broadcast for KNTV San Jose Channel 11 news on October 25, 1966. The broadcast script for this date has not survived. Reel 1: Segment 1 (silent + sound): Artist painting on an easel in his studio, surrounded by his war paintings on the walls. He is painting an image of two soldiers in Vietnam, one on his knees holding a rifle. He is then interviewed by Dennis Rowedder, who asks him why he volunteered for this job [presumably the Vietnam Combat Artists Program]. The man answers that he did this work before in World War II, and being an artist he thought he owed a debt to society. As a historical painter, he will be going to the front line in order to see the war in person. [Based on records, the artist is possibly Augustine G. Acuna from Monterey] Segment 2 (silent + sound): Man giving a speech at the Santa Clara Valley Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association dinner. Followed by interview with the man, who appears to be associated with San Jose State athletics. "Our [football] coaching staff has done a tremendous job. I think this was displayed in early season when they had most of their boys healthy. Since the season has moved on, they have now about 8 real serious injuries, combined with four or five less serious injuries, and it's forced them to change their whole strategy, their whole offense and defense. I think early season games demonstrated that our coaches had tremendous imagination, and did a fine job of coaching, which they are still doing." He's asked if the injuries will improve enough to help in the last ball game. "We're always hoping, and time will tell...there are at least five key men that will not play the rest of the year." The interview is followed by a brief silent clip of two athletes at the awards dinner. Reel 2: Segment 1 (sound): Comments on the report by California Attorney General Thomas Lynch detailing alleged illegal activity in the Santa Clara County Tax Assessor's Office. The speaker disparages the report, citing inaccuracies. For example, he says, "he said the former assessor, Mr. Pitman, took some money while he was a county employee. Check the records of the county, I find that he retired effective 30 November 1961; he went to work for this firm, supposedly where he had gotten this money -- Libby, McNeil & Libby -- on January 1, 1962. Now, if this is gonna be the type of report where he's inaccurate, the Attorney General's office investigating WHEN he severed his relationship with the county, and when he went to work for Libby, McNeil & Libby, I don't think he did a very good job in the investigation. I myself found this out with a couple of phone calls." Segment 2 (silent + sound): Silent footage of San Jose City Council meeting, followed by Councilman Dr. Joseph Pace speaking to camera, regarding the Santa Clara County Assessor's Office. "The property taxes are going to be out in another week or so, and they're gonna knock the people between the eyes. I'd like to see everybody get a fair break on the assessor's office. The locked files over at the assessor's office have never been adequately explained, and as far as I know the escapement of taxes have never come into the public coffers. If they have, they've kept it a secret. I've wanted to get Hayden Pitman and Mr. Noll before the grand jury and I requested this by telegram several months ago...I wanna get this thing rolling so the escapement of taxes gets in so that it helps reflect on our property tax.." Segment 3 (sound): Statement by a man representing an unnamed association, endorsing a bond to raise money for the San Jose Municipal Airport. "We believe this is a sound way for funding the necessary improvements in probably the outstanding airport in the state of California. It is a growing facility, it's air transportation as I understand it is the 9th busiest airport in the nation. This is the only proposition on the November ballot, the only City of San Jose bond issue that the association is supporting. It is a bond issue that can surely use the slogan of no tax increase in connection with a measure. And you can justify that slogan with an active record of revenues and expenditures. When San Jose was seeking approval of the PUC for a permit for PSA, they estimated at 25-35000 people a month would use the airport. And at the present time they figures are 40,000 people a month are using the facilities of the san Jose Municipal Airport. This airport is important for the industrial development of san Jose, for the Santa Clara Valley generally. And in light of the excellent past history of the airport, the financial integrity, the association is pleased to endorse this bond issue. " Reel 3: Segment 1 (sound): Interview with a San Jose City official about a new ordinance that restricts the number of animals a person can own to two. The reporter asks what happens if a person has three cats, what should they do with the third cat? The man says they should think about eliminating some of their animals in order to meet the ordinance. Of course, he says, they won't know about the extra animals unless someone files a complaint. The reporter asks what happens if the person refuses to give up their extra animals? The man says they try to be understanding, but sometimes it is necessary to cite the owners in court. Segment 2 (sound): Interview with a man wearing a uniform, likely San Jose animal control, about the ordinance restricting the number of animals citizens can own. The reporter asks what they tell a person when they have too many animals. He says they try to explain the ordinance to them and why they need to give up their animals. What happens to the animals? They are taken to the humane society and impounded, and kept 96 hours. Segment 3 (silent): Auditorium filled with mostly women, seated at tables, viewing a presentation of calculations. Segment 4 (silent, color): Exterior of the Legion of Honor museum in San Francisco, then an interior tour of the "Dutch Paintings of the Seventeenth Century" exhibition of Dutch masters, including Portrait of a Boy by Rembrandt, and Young Man with a Skull by Frans Hals. [The exhibition was on display at the Legion of Honor from October 11 - November 13, 1966.
