Kings of the Arctic

[Music] [Applause] thank you far up in the lonely wastes of the Arctic in the North Pacific and Bering Seas roam the Hardy seals and sea lions nine months of the year they spend in the open oceans but each year methodically returned to the land for mating and forbearing their young always do they return to the same Rocky Islands inhabited by none but their own numerous species each has its set place and nature permits of no trespassing [Music] Birds too once a year go back to the land for nesting after spending most of their time upon the ocean even sleeping in the wave drops [Music] the MERS gather so thickly that any random step would crush eggs and nestlings [Music] muffins known as the sea parrots Nest among the MERS and these species also obey the laws of non-interference foreign Rocky Cliffs are covered by thousands upon thousands of the feathery creatures once they come and where they go is a mystery of the Arctic [Music] the seals and sea lions live under a system of arbitrary and successful polygamy the Bulls many times the size of the cows rule their harems with little trouble except when their rule is contested by Young bachelors [Music] constant is the struggle for Supremacy between the bull of a harem and the bachelor males [Music] foreign [Music] Bull in his prime May weigh more than a ton and his only dangerous enemy in the Seas is the killer whale smaller creatures do well to avoid him foreign [Music] season the Bulls go without food and protect their harems which may number as many as a hundred females the little pups crawling and stumbling among the rocks are taught to swim and in about six weeks can navigate on their own foreign s live to themselves along the edge of the island until they grow big and courageous enough to challenge the older Bulls if he loses his fight he goes back and waits with the others until he can make a new challenge [Music] these battles of the Giants are not fights to the death but in ferocity and power they cannot be surpassed [Music] when two tons of Flesh and Bone meet it becomes a struggle to be feared in spite of their apparent clumsiness their agility is amazing with their sharp teeth they can slash and rip an opponent to pieces [Music] [Applause] after an old bull is beaten and his Harem taken over by the Conqueror he runs away and all the others snap at him there is no such thing as sportsmanship in the sea lion world foreign [Music] he becomes a lonely useless beast and can only die all reason for living is gone [Music] fog rises from the sea and covers the barren Islands foreign [Music] knows some things about the sea and its creatures some he may never understand [Music] foreign foreign and the rocks and the animals and the water itself Fade Into the fog covering the mystery of life among the embattled kings of the Arctic [Music]
