1st Lt. Sam Loggins (Frank Sinatra) is in charge of a reconnaissance unit that has just lost its radioman. He is attracted to a French woman, but she is afraid to get involved with a US soldier because her now-dead father was a Negro. Loggins is forced to the sidelines as the handsome and smooth-talking Harris takes over.
