A golfer is pictured setting his clubs into his golf cart (1:34) as a jogger runs through an open park (:34). The film notes that most people live highly inactive lives as pedestrians are filmed riding up the escalator (1:13). A secretary performs her duties while sitting down all day, not ideal for overall health (1:18). As television became more popular; more folks spend time sitting down after work (1:47). A magazine displays a fitness ad (2:01) as another woman is seen jogging in the woods. Proper shoe gear is highlighted best for running (2:47). A woman goes for a long distance jog around the track (3:12). Jogging is beneficial to the body as it requires excess amounts of oxygen into the body and strengthens the cardiovascular system (3:12). A diagram of a human anatomy shows that the legs operate as a second heart (3:42) as the body moves. A young couple runs and plays on the beach (4:20). The film then notes as a woman ages, her metabolism slows down. She is then pictured weighing herself on a scale (4:47). A woman runs along the shore for exercise (4:57). An overweight person eats food on the couch while watching television (5:12). A doctor checks a man’s blood pressure (5:29) in the doctor’s office. An overweight man plays with his belly outside in the park (5:34). Back at the doctor’s office another patient has his body fat calculated in a skin fold test (5:58). A stress test is used for cardio-vascular fitness (6:09). Another good method to test one’s physical health is to test for how long one can maintain a jog before slowing to a walk (6:44). A pedestrian sits with a physical education teacher in order to develop a proper jogging program to support their health (7:19). Prior to beginning any exercise; it helps to stretch and warm up one’s muscles (7:29). A slow motion climber exercise (7:39) and a toe touch exercise are demonstrated (7:49). Another exercise conducted while on the back is to pull the knee into the chest (8:00). Proper jogging form follows (8:22). Another method in maintaining health is to get regular and thorough physical exams (9:13). The running boom of the 1970s occurred in high- and middle-income countries. It was a ‘jogging’ movement in which running was generally limited to personal physical activity and often pursued alone for recreation and fitness. It is estimated that 25 million Americans took up some aspect of running in the 1970s and 1980s.

[Music] [Music] in today's mechanized world most of us lead physically inactive lives we drive to stores that we could have walked to there is little exercise when we ride the bus [Music] escalators deprive us of the physical benefits of climbing stairs for many people even their work gives little or no physical exercise [Music] and then when we do exercise we tend to let machines do the work for us whenever possible [Music] unfortunately most people watch too much television there's no exercise in that [Music] many people realize that a good outward appearance is not a measure of physical fitness so they try fast fitness plans advertised in magazines some magazine ads promise effortless ways to develop fantastic muscles or greater bust lines sometimes guaranteed in days but there are no shortcuts to fitness [Music] making yourself physically fit will develop your cardiovascular system along with the respiratory system it can not only control the waistline but prolong your life jogging is one activity that leads to physical fitness it takes little equipment just jogging shoes and a place to jog shoes support and protect your feet they also distribute your weight between the heel and four part of the shoe when purchasing jogging shoes the heel of the shoe should be the same height as the ball of the foot the front part should be flexible so your muscles and joints bend normally the arch and heel should be rigid to give proper support exercises like long distance swimming walking and jogging are aerobic exercises requiring that large amounts of oxygen be consumed for a prolonged period of time such exercises make your heart beat at approximately 150 times a minute this strengthens your heart lungs and cardiovascular system oxygen can then be used by these systems with greater efficiency do you know that you have a second heart when jogging your leg muscles act as a second heart as they aid the return of the blood to the heart through the venous system [Music] you might think that jogging in place would have the same benefits as jogging around the track but it doesn't more time is required when jogging in place to get the same effect as going around the track because the hips joints and leg muscles receive more action because people of high school age are active in sports and social activities their lifestyle helps keep their weight down but what happens after this girl leaves school her lifestyle will change she won't be as active as now for many people creeping obesity will start in gaining one or two pounds of weight a year doesn't sound like much but after 10 or 20 years believe me creeping obesity will have made an impact what do you do change from a lifestyle of inactivity to one of physical activity let's find out what shape you're in is your doctor satisfied with your weight can you control your eating smoking and drinking habits [Music] can you run or climb stairs without becoming short of breath [Music] is your blood pressure normal are you satisfied with your muscle tone if you answered no to any of the questions you are not physically fit and should consider beginning an exercise program before starting any kind of jogging program check with your doctor to find out what kind of physical shape you're in the examination should include a skin fold test which determines what percentage of your body is fat and what percentage is muscle and a stress test for cardiovascular fitness [Music] after a thorough physical examination check your own cardiovascular fitness by seeing how far you can jog in 12 minutes [Music] if you become exhausted slow down and start walking [Music] after 12 minutes stop and estimate how far you've gone this can determine what kind of physical shape you're in for a high school student less than one mile is poor one and a half miles is fair and over one and three quarters miles is excellent there are books available that can help you develop a jogging program [Music] before jogging warm up a bit stretch and strengthen the lower back and abdomen [Music] this slow mountain climber exercise stretches the lower back the alternating toe touching exercise adds the gluteal muscle to the stretching action [Music] this isometric toe touch along with the high knee bend adds the hamstring and buttocks to the stretching action doing a trunk stretch like this stretches the trunk region of the body when jogging keep an upright angle leaning neither too far forward nor backwards don't look at your feet look at how relaxed the face neck and shoulders are joggers keep the arms relaxed and at the waistline keep your body relaxed so you'll receive the full physical and psychological benefits if you breathe through your mouth more oxygen will reach your lungs use a heel to toe technique to jog land on the heel then rock forward to the ball of the foot for the next stride [Music] try to jog on terrain which is soft like a track surface grass or dirt road jogging on hard surfaces such as asphalt or cement can injure your feet jogging develops your physical fitness in many ways but remember first have a thorough physical examination follow the instruction of a good book on aerobics or check with someone who is familiar with this kind of exercise get the right kind of shoes jog on soft terrain the choice is yours you can live with the sedentary mechanized world or join the people leading a physically active way of life [Music] [Applause] [Music] you
