Description: Against a background of his home and what he describes as a bourgeois, middle-class life, and his studio, 30-year-old artist Jim Dine discusses his life and work. Not classifying himself among the Pop Artists, yet working concurrently with them, and associating with them, Dine in his art comments on objects familiar to him, familiar objects that he likes. As he says, “my art is about my life.” In this program he traces his artistic development through various periods: his “tie” period; his “tool” period; his “bathroom” period; his “child’s room” period; his “palette” period; and his sculpture period with his furniture-sculptures. He has been interested in Happenings –which have developed out of the artist’s need to speak more directly with the viewer –and a Happening, with Dine’s discussion of it, is included in the film.
