Jesus At Nazareth And Capernaum (1952)

[music] [music] [music] home of the religious rulers of Israel. Here, where the great temple drew the devout from all parts of the country, a new prophet had come from Galilee. His name was Jesus, and wherever he went, the people followed him. He spoke with great authority and his words were clear and powerful. Moreover, during the feast of the Passover, he had driven the merchants and money changers out of the temple courtyard. The Pharisees and rulers of the temple had been very much angered by this action of Jesus. Not only did they regard him as a troublemaker, but his influence over the people was beginning to change the normal course of things. Not only were the people following this new prophet everywhere, leaving their homes and their work to be near him. But if Jesus were allowed to go on, he soon would have all of Jerusalem worshiping him. And then the Pharisees would lose their power over the people. Jesus knew what was in their minds, but he did not care to do anything about it. end. The Passover, which was the main reason for his coming to Jerusalem, was over, and now he would take his disciples back to Galilee. It would be foolish to anger the Pharisees too much at the moment. Besides, there was his father's work to do in Galilee. And so leaving Jerusalem, Jesus and his disciples traveled northward through Judea and Samaria and into Galilee, where in the town of Canaa he was welcomed by the Galileans. Many of them had also been to Jerusalem for the Passover feast, and most of them had seen or heard of the deeds that Jesus had performed. And so the people of Canaa were not too surprised when Jesus preached to them the gospel of God, saying that the time was fulfilled and the kingdom of heaven was at hand, telling them to repent and believe in the gospel. Some miles away in Capernium, a small boy was very ill. His father was a nobleman who had hired the best physician to cure his son. But the physician had given up hope and told the nobleman that his son would not get well. >> Not get well. You must do something. I've done all that I can do. I'm afraid he will not live. >> The boy was dying. The physician could do nothing more, nor the father, nor the mother. The servants could do nothing but stand and watch. Then one of the servants remembered, >> "Master, there is one who could help your son. He has healed others. It is even said." Who? Who is it? >> His name is Jesus. He is from Nazareth, but he is now in Kaa, not too far away. >> Jesus? Yes, I've heard of him. I wonder. Prepare for my journey. Bring my cloak. I'll bring him here. In Kaa on the following day at about the seventh hour, the nobleman found Jesus. >> Forgive me. I must get to him. Master, you must come with me to Capernium at once. My son is dying. >> Unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe. Sir, come to Capernium or my child will die. Go. Your son is alive and well. Master, master, we have great news. Lord, your son lives. He is well again. >> I know. I know. Tell me, at what hour did my son get well? >> It was the seventh hour yesterday. Sir. Go. >> Your son is alive but well. >> Come. I must hurry back and tell the boy and his mother how his life was saved. And so [music] in Capernium now there were new followers who having received the blessings of the humble carpenter from Nazareth were also singing his praises and glorifying his name. But even though the fame of Jesus ministry was spreading far and wide, and though there were multitudes who received the Savior, there were still many unbelievers who were ready to reject him. And when Jesus came back to Nazareth, where he had lived until he grew up to manhood, he naturally went to the synagogue, as was his custom on the Sabbath day. On that day, the synagogue was crowded, for the people had heard about some of the miracles Jesus had done in other places. And though most of them did not believe these accounts, they were curious to see and hear this son of Joseph. Being the honored guest for this occasion, Jesus had [music] been asked to read. The spirit of the Lord is upon me because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captive and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. >> Is he not Joseph's son? >> Yes. Jesus, >> son of Joseph the carpenter. >> How is it he says the scripture is fulfilled? Does he think he is the fulfillment of it? Oh yes. >> No doubt you will quote to me this proverb. Physician heal yourself. What we have heard you did at Capernium do here also in your own country. Truly I say to you, a prophet is without honor in his own country. >> Oh yes. >> But in truth I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the heaven was shut up for 3 years and 6 months. when there came a great famine over all the lands. And Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarapath in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. Oh yes. >> And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha. And none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian. >> Would he compare himself to Elisha? >> He is a false prophet. Come out. [music] All right. >> [music] [bell] [music] >> So the people of Nazareth, rejecting Jesus as a prophet in his own town, took him out of the synagogue and up to the brow of a hill. Their anger was so great that they intended to throw him from the cliff. But he, passing through the midst of them, went his way to Capernium. >> [music] >> And thus it was that in Jerusalem the people had followed Jesus. In Canaa he had been welcomed, but in Nazareth where he had grown to manhood, his own people had rejected him. But then, as Jesus had said, a prophet is without honor in his own country. However, in Capernium by the sea, the people received him as their own, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled. The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphali toward the sea, across Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for these who sat in the region and shadow of death, light has dawned. [music] [music]
