Jasper's Hospital Experience

some of the things that might happen to you  while you're here my name is Donna and I'm one of the people that you'll meet on Kids  Corner today the hospital is a very large and busy place but it's a very good place too  sometimes while you're here you may feel afraid that whose feelings are really natural  it would help the doctors the nurses and your parents if you would talk about things  that frighten you sometimes if you sit together and talk about the things that scare  you you feel better Jasper came to the hospital a few days ago to have an operation he came  with his friend Linda and it went like this stop wait what is it Jasper Linda I've changed my  mind I don't want to have my tonsils taken out but Jasper you've had so many sore throats the doctor  feels you need this operation I don't want to I'm really afraid can you tell me about it well I'm  scared because this place is so big and there are so many people I'm afraid that things might happen  to me here Jasper I understand that you're afraid and that's nothing to be ashamed of the hospital  is very big and it is busy good then I'll get my suitcase and my teddy bear and let's go home  Jasper I said I understand why you're afraid but I also know that the doctor and nurses are expecting  you today if we go now Linda they'll never miss us oh yes they will Jasper the nurses are waiting  upstairs on a special floor just for children have they ever taken anybody's tonsils out before  Oh Jasper many times do they take care of many monsters well maybe not monsters but they know all  about children well what would happen to me now if I should decide to stay well when I had my tonsils  out it was sort of like this you go upstairs and the nurse will probably ask you lots of  questions while she weighs and measures you she'll listen to your heart and then she'll  write all of this information down in your chart I see maybe I'll stay then okay I'll let  you push the buttons on the elevator will I get to ride in a wheelchair sometime sure you will  Jasper okay then let's go on up to my room let's go this is a nice room what's this well Jasper this is a hospital gown  a gown no way my legs would show Jasper this is nice it has cowboys and horses on it cowboys  and horses did you wear one of these of course I did let me help you on with this the hospital  wants you to wear this because it's very clean and it's comfortable well I guess so oh but Linda  this crib has got to go I'm not a baby oh Jasper this isn't a crib this is a hospital bed even  adults have railings on the sides of their beds even adults yes that's so you won't fall out at  night and hurt yourself yeah you wouldn't want to hurt yourself in a hospital I guess aha very funny  Jasper I'll turn the bed down and then you can hop in there hi Jasper hi Linda hi hi Nancy I brought  the bracelet you're going to be wearing while you're here in the hospital Hospital first a  gown and then a bracelet that's right this one has your name on it everybody wears these here  in the hospital so the doctors and nurses will know who you are oh look it does have my name on  it it says Jasper here are your call buttons up here see the button it's right here now if you  need a nurse you can just push this and one of them will come oh good I'll have people coming  and going from my room all the time I'll just beep the old button Jasper wait a minute this is  serious there are lots of other children for us to take care of on the floor here so you can't be  playing with the buttons If you really need one of us you can go ahead and push it do you understand  I understand good I need to take your temperature now would you hold this under your tongue why well  this is another way for us to tell whether you're sick or not if you have a fever then the doctor  may not want to operate right away okay good okay I need to take your blood pressure  too you're going to press my blood yes wa a minute well this doesn't hurt a  bit J right just wrap this around your arm kind of gives you a little hug looks  scary well it really doesn't hurt at all this is a way for us to tell  how hard your heart is working there take a look at your temperature here Jasper  how is my heart your heart's just fine and so is your temperature I'm going to write a few things  down in your chart right now hello are you Jasper who are you she's the lab technician she needs  a blood sample from me wait a minute my blood is on the inside of me I'm going to have to prick  your finger to get a few Dr drops of blood from my slide will it hurt a little bit but you can  say ouch why do you need my blood anyway hold up your finger well they need it down in the  lab so they can look at it under a microscope ouch that did hurt a little bit thank you Jasper  for holding still that helped a lot okay Jasper I have one more thing before we go I need to get  a urine sample from you I don't have any well I need you to urinate into this little cup oh into  that little cup mhm the bathroom right over there and I'll wait for you here until you're finished  oh and I bet that cup goes down to the laboratory too that's right you're getting to be a smart  little monster here let me help you out children I want you to listen very carefully here's an  important message for you hey what are we doing out of the bottle this is dangerous a little kid  might come along and think we were candy that would be awful because we're medicine he might  even eat us no this is serious serious we could make you delirious delirious you should have the  healthy fear of us fear of us too much of us is dangerous we're not candy  believe us even though we look so fine and dandy when you're  sick we come in handy but we we're not handy doctors tell the pharmacy Pharmacy types  of pills that you will need you will need and he knows the harm that we can be we can be if  we're not taken carefully w w we're not candy the elevator down to X-ray  and I'll be right back okay we'll stay right here won't we Jasper Linda what Jasper have you  ever had an x-ray before sure I have many times what will they do to me there well you go into  the X-ray room and it's a room filled with large Machinery that can take pictures of the inside  of your body will it hurt me no it won't hurt you Jasper a technician will ask you to sit on the  end of a table and then she'll take a picture of the inside of your chest can they see my inside  smiling no Jasper they can't see your inside smiling oh how does that machine work anyway  well the X-ray is an invisible wave that passes through your body and it shows up as a shadow on  a special film can I have the picture when they finish no you can't Jasper the picture's for the  radiologist a radio who not a radio radiologist he's a doctor specially trained to look at X-rays  and see if there's something wrong with the inside of your body well that sounds easy enough and you  did say that it won't hurt didn't you it won't hurt Jasper okay did you know that a long time  ago people thought you became sick because you had done something wrong or bad today we know  that isn't true our bodies become ill because of germs and sometimes even when you take care of  your body it can get sick did you do you know that the things that happen to you when you're sick  like throwing up or having to go to the bathroom or feeling warm all over are actually good for you  funny isn't it that those uncomfortable things are actually good we don't believe as people did  a long time ago we know that even nice people like you can get sick sometimes Jasper's back in  his room now let's go join him Jasper you've had your test and your X-ray I think that's all for  now Linda what Jasper you're not leaving now are you well not if you need me for something I'm  hungry let's go down to the snack bar and get something to eat Jasper your meal will be brought  to you on a trade oh then I'll have a hamburger and french fries and four ice cream cones wait a  minute little friend you do get to pick your food but you have to pick something from the hospital  menu everyone here wants to see you eat the right food so that you'll grow strong and healthy  and be able to leave soon Linda what Jasper I don't want you to go yet I know you don't  Jasper but I can't stay here tonight I have to go home the nurses will be here all night  and they'll be able to take care of anything that you need will you come back to visit me  of course I will I'll be here in the morning will you read me a story before you leave  sure I even brought your favorite books oh good it's the morning of the day of Jasper's  operation his friend Linda is with him let's join him good morning Jasper hi Linda I'm glad you're  here I'm hungry and thirsty and would you get me a glass of orange juice for breakfast Jasper you  can't have anything to eat or drink this morning do you see this sign it says nothing by mouth  those are your doctor's orders on the morning of your operation Nothing by mouth what does  that mean nothing by mouth means that you can't eat or drink anything because it might upset your  stomach before or after the operation yeah I sure don't want to get sick I already have this funny  feeling in my stomach what kind of a funny feeling Jasper well it's a feeling I get in my stomach  when I'm a little bit nervous or afraid are you afraid uh-huh it's natural to be afraid Jasper  I was afraid when I had my operation Linda what Jasper will you come with me into the operating  room no Jasper I can't come into the operating room with you the operating room is only for  doctors or nurses what are they going to do to me in there well the doctors and nurses will try  to fix what's bothering you in your case Jasper your tonsils probably you'll be put on a stretcher  that's a moving table with wheels and roll down to the operating room then a nurse will help you on  to the operating table and you'll probably notice a doctor there he's called an anesthesiologist an  an this is who an anesthesiologist he's a special doctor Jasper and he'll ask you to breathe into  a mask which you'll place over your nose and your mouth a mask will I be wearing a mask not for the  whole operation Jasper this is just the way the doctor puts you into a deep type of sleep oh I'm  glad you told me about the mask I might have been afraid oh and I hope I don't snore that would be  embarrassing this isn't the same type of sleep you do at night Jasper this is a much deeper type of  sleep so that you won't feel anything during your operation and you won't wake up until it's all  over I'm afraid it is scary I felt afraid too you did but you're a grownup even grown-ups feel  afraid sometimes wow good morning Jasper good morning is it time to go downstairs not just yet  the orderly will be up in a few minutes with the stretcher oh don't bother about that old stretcher  I can walk you're going to feel too sleepy to walk down to surgery I'm not sleepy I just woke up  well I'm going to give you a shot that'll make you feel very relaxed and sleepy so I want you to  hold real still a shot mhm it sting for just a few seconds ow ooh there that did hurt a little  bit now I'm going to put a Band-Aid on it oh good there you go that feels better I need to  put the railing up so you don't fall out and hurt yourself there you are see you later Jasper  goodbye Linda Linda you're not going away now are you no Jasper I'm right here and I'll be waiting  here when you come back from your operation oh why don't you just come downstairs with me and  you can wait right outside the operating room and that way you can see me first thing when I  wake up you wake up in a recovery room that's a special room in the hospital just for people  waking up from their operations and there'll be a nurse there with you why don't you try to  close your eyes and get some rest now Jasper okay did you hear Jasper say ouch when he got that  shot that's because it hurt it would help the doctor or nurse if you would relax your arm hold  still and say ouch when the shot's over it may be necessary while you're in the hospital  to have a shot but nobody really likes them let's look in another patient Jennifer's been in the hospital for a number of days  now Jennifer's just sick of being sick well I'm getting tired of this old bed and I'd  like to leave here quick oh I hate these crazy stomach pains oh man I'm sick of being  sick did you hear me I'm sick of being sick think I'll lay back and I'll rest my  head because resting is the trick I'll take the syrup and I'll take those pills because  I'm sick of being sick and they will cure me I'm so sick of being sick but it won't be  long now and I won't be sick not anymore Jasper's surgery is over and  he's in the recovery room now where's Linda my throat hurts Jasper Jasper  you're in the recovery room you just had your tonsils out where's Linda you're just waking  up from the operation honey you'll see Linda real soon just try not to talk I I want Linda just  try not to talk and your throat won't hurt so much honey I'm still kind of sleepy you're just waking  up from the operation Now Jasper you'll be awake enough pretty soon to go back to your room and  you'll be able to see Linda then okay it's okay how are you feeling I'm feeling better but  my throat still hurts I'm sure your throat hurts but the doctor said you're doing just  fine and you'll be able to go home I will oh that's great I can't wait to go home and  play in the swing and run in my yard wait a minute you're going to have to take it  easy for a few days so that your body can recuperate then the sore throat you have  will be gone and you'll be feeling fine you know what Linda what Jasper I'm going  to tell all the kids in my neighborhood about the things I've seen and done in the  hospital they'll want to know everything that happened hi nurse Nancy well Jasper are you  ready to leave the hospital that's right I'm all packed and I've got my suitcase and my  teddy bear and Linda's downstairs thank you for everything well thank you for being such  a good patient if I ever get sick again I'm coming back to this Hospital good well take care  of yourself and stay healthy okay I will let's go when you're not yourself my friend and you're not so well when you're feeling  sick my friend you come to the hospital the people here are all your friends to help when you're afraid you can be  a our helper too by doing what we
