Part I deals with Ivan's struggle to establish himself as Tsar aided by his love for the Tsaritsa Anastasia. It ends with her death by poisoning, turning Ivan's energies solely to his political aims. The ruthlessness of Ivan's measures against the boyars and his conflicts with the Church are the subjects of Part II. A sequence in Part II is the only example of Eisenstein's use of color.
