Description: Describes and illustrates the musical characteristics and operating principles of the instruments of a woodwind quintet. Members of the New York Woodwind Quintet introduce a young audience to the flute, piccolo, bassoon, oboe, clarinet, and the French Horn (present among woodwinds because it is a "very friendly instrument--musically speaking"). Four compositions are performed to demonstrate the voices of the various instruments. Introductory remarks are by Yehudi Menuhin. Music includes: Milhaud, The Hunting Scene; von Weber, Rondo in Hungarian Style; Mussorgsky, Ballet of the Unhatched Chickens; and Reicha, Movement from Quintet in E Flat, Opus 88, no. 2.
