School teacher Bertram Cates is accused of teaching Darwinism in a small Southern town. The teacher's defense is to be handled by the equally well-known Henry Drummond, one of America's most controversial legal minds. The town is excited because appearing for the prosecution will be Matthew Brady, a noted statesman and a Biblical scholar, a staunch foe of Darwinism.
