IN ALL THE WORLD

[Music] in all the world there is no region more favored by Nature than America's Great Northwest from The Plains of eastern Montana Westward to the Inland Empire in Washington along the Continental Divide from Wyoming North to the Canadian province of Alberta extends an area which surpasses all others in natural beauty Glacier National Park in Montana and Waterton Lakes park across the International boundary in Alberta Canada are the center and crowning Glory of this Enchanted playground it is a region ideally suited to vacation activities of all kinds a region of forested Hills high mountains snow-fed rivers and lovely Lakes come with us now on a camera exploration of this most delightful vacation land [Music] riding the smooth steel Highway of the Great Northern Westward from Chicago Eastward from Seattle and Portland come thousands of eager vacationists to spend a happy ude in glorious Glacier Park Glacier is the only one of our national parks on the main line of a transcontinental railroad with two entrances directly on the route of the Empire Builder famous luxury train running between Chicago in the Pacific Northwest visitors from all parts of North America arrive at this gateway to an 1800 squ mile vacation land where they receive the greeting of copper skinned Americans to whom this region has been home for nearly 300 years Chief bull Wades in water weasel feather bull child lone Running Wolf and members of their families turn out in full black feet travel regalia to act as a reception committee only a few hundred ft from the station at the Eastern entrance of This Magnificent playground is Glacier Park Hotel towards which new arrivals stroll past beautiful beds of cultivated flowers but these carefully tended flowers imported from the outside world are only a Prelude to the gorgeous profusion of native wild flowers soon to be seen along the meadow slopes the valleys and Highlands of Nature's Wonderland [Music] Glacier Park Hotel one of four picturesque hostelries in the park is known to the Indians as the Big Trees Lodge and the hospitality comfort and unique atmosphere of this fine establishment are typical of the traditions of the Old West the air is perfumed with the odor of pine logs burning in great open fireplaces sharpening appetites for a hearty luncheon and the beginning of the first Excursion into Glacier [Music] Park after unpacking luggage and changing to comfortable sports clothes we're ready for our first Adventure luxurious specially designed motor coaches are ready to take us over wide highways Into the Heart of GL Park senic Splendor the driver of every coach is a college man courteous intelligent and well-versed in the history and natural wonders of the park after skirting the shore of lower 2 Medicine Lake we continue over a highway bordered by large pole Pines and fur trees to our first [Music] stop leaving our bus at the highway we set out on a Woodland Trail which leads for a quarter of a mile up into a canyon cut by Waters flowing from two medicon Lake through these Cathedral arches of Mountain Greenery we are approaching trick Falls two waterfalls in one above us is the Upper Falls and they are below pouring out a Cascade from a rock wall is the lower Falls in early summer the Upper Falls completely hides the lower and there you have the trick in trick Falls a short motor coach ride takes us to two medicine Chalet on the shore of the middle to Medicine Lake almost a mile above sea level about 3 m away looms the rugged Peak of Mount Rockwell whose upper slopes at an altitude of almost 9,000 ft are frequently the playground of mountain GS now we are to take a boat trip on one of Glacier Park's 250 Jade and Sapphire Lakes [Music] the crystal clear waters of two medicon Lake are encircled by Trails leading to Dawson pass cutbank pass and two medicon pass all of which cross the Continental Divide we leave our boat at the upper end of the lake or another exploration of one of Glacier Park's hidden wonders spilling over from the third or upper two Medicine Lake the Waters of Twin Fall separate at the top of a cliff cascading down over the rocks to join again in a single stream of icy [Music] coldness who can resist the urge to investigate The Shining rocks the ferns and flowers that grow beside the silver Cascade of a mountain waterfall so we climb right into the picture to clamber up the slippery slopes and feel the cool spray upon our faces while we breathe The Haunting fragrance of Nature's Forest magic then off Go shoes and socks and childhood memories awaken with a tingle of icy water on bare toes back at Glacier Park Hotel again for a round of golf before dinner on a sporty course encircled by senic distractions that might very well equalize the skill of amateurs and experts [Music] this is the life for any vacationist golf in the most colorful region of the Rockies with all the worries of the work a day world forgotten then back we go for dinner at the hotel brim full of Renewed Energy and a ravenous appetite with dinner over good music brings Rhythm to our feet and we join a happy group of dancers adding new names and new faces to our roster of memories as the first day of our vacation comes to an end we realize that here at Glacier Park we have found in the right proportion a mixture of unsurpassed outdoor enjoyment City diversions and all the Comforts of the most palatial [Applause] home early next morning One Vacation party starts out on a pack trip over one of the long Wilderness Trails by easy stages they will climb to high mountain passes skirt glaciers ride down through magnificent valleys follow tumbling streams to Placid Lakes they carry with them all their equipment so they can camp overnight wherever they like for us today holds other Adventures we stay behind to attend a dance far different from the one we enjoyed last evening every summer some of the black feed Indians pitch their teepees at Glacier Park Hotel to entertain the guests with monial dances here is a scene out of America's past the graceful figures of a dance set to a tribal chant in honor of the sun when the dance is over the rich voice of honorable Wades in water tells the visitors of the history and traditions of his people and of neighboring tribes in the listening Circle proudly arrayed in their most prized finery are Mrs Wades and water and Mrs Chief bull while bull child has an entertaining word or two for two pale-faced maidens from far away what lady could resist examining such ornaments as these and now Begins the ceremony through which several members of our party are officially adopted into the black feat tribe given Indian names they are pushed forward to indicate entry into their new relationships hands are clasped as a symbol of Brotherhood and in the final stage of the ceremony the Insignia of Earth is marked upon their fathers [Music] after lunch we board a motor coach and start off once more in search of Adventure here we are looking up to medicon Valley with Rising Wolf Mountain and several other colorful peaks in the distance we pause to gaze out over cutbank Valley Beyond lie a million Acres of sublime [Music] Wilderness directly ahead as we drive along the highway is divide Mountain the top of the Hudson Bay divide which sheds its Waters in two directions to reach the Gulf of Mexico by way of the Missouri and Hudson's Bay by way of the St Mary [Music] River traveling northward we reach lower St Mary Lake and stopped to appreciate a miracle of Natural Beauty from The Waters at the left mountains rise like the Gallant prows of ancient gallions [Music] now we have reached the point where the American and Canadian Rockies meet far different from other International boundaries in other parts of the world is this peaceful border between two friendly Nations the formalities at the Canadian customs are simple and quickly over a friendly welcome to Waterton Lakes Park and we are on our way at the head of Waterton Lake Rises mount cranel and on a Promontory at its base is the Magnificent Prince of Wales Hotel whose gracious Hospitality to visiting Americans could not have a more perfect natural [Music] setting from the lobby of the Prince of Wales Hotel we look out over the long expanse of Blue Water cradled between the serrated peaks of the Canadian Rockies Midway down the lake is the international boundary Beyond is glorious Glacier Park to the left in the distance is Mount Cleveland highest of all the mountains in the two [Music] parks out come the cameras again to record for friends at home The Unbelievable Majesty of this vacation Paradise after a brief stay at the hotel we go aboard the passenger boat International for a cruise Southward on Waterton Lake this Pleasant Voyage takes us from Village in the Canadian province of Alberta down to Goat haunt camp at the very tip of the lake in Glacier Park [Music] USA goat haunt camp at the end of our Lake cruise is one of four camps for Riders of the North Circle Trails its name comes from the frequent appearance of mountain goats most famous of the big game of the Rockies [Music] now back again northward to our Canadian headquarters with all the scenery looking different as we see it from the southern angle our drive from the dock to the Prince of Wales Hotel takes us past the foot of Cameron Falls where frolicking water tumbles over strange rock formations to create a fantastic tapestry of motion and cover like many of the most striking features of Glacier and water in Lakes Parks this Beauty Spot is within easy walking distance of our stopping Place only a few minutes walk from this waterfall would take us to the center of picturesque Waterton village with its summer homes its shops bathing beaches and the church and post office while mother and dad are trail riding hiking or simply relaxing there's plenty of activity on a well equipped playground to entertain the children but all the fun is not reserved exclusively for the small fries the older girls find a romantic thrill in the appearance of a real live mounty red coat and all it's Sunday morning and we are far from home but tucked away in this lovely Canadian Village is a little church where we will find a hearty welcome awaiting us there are few places on Earth where we could hope to find the peace the Tranquility that is ours as we pause to worship the creator of this wondrous land of cloud soaring Peaks m y waterfalls and flacid [Music] Lakes we'd like to linger for weeks to enjoy the hospitality of our Canadian neighbors but there are many things to be done and many new Treasures to unearth before our vacation is over and so our gasoline powered Magic Carpet takes us once more to the border and the United States custom station [Music] just ahead as we leave is famed Chief Mountain Guardian Sentinel of this vacation Paradise our observation coach now speeds along the smooth Highway which follows the banks of Swift Current River [Music] at the government checking station we receive an official welcome from one of the many Park Service Representatives who are here to help make our visit more interesting and enjoyable from this point we look up Swift Current Valley whose Vistas promise new adventures in the hours to come [Music] suddenly as we approach many Glacier hotel we discover the breathtaking beauty of Swift Current Falls before we begin our exploration of this new land of delights we climb to a vantage point on the slope of Mount Alton Far Below Us Now lies Swift Current Lake and on its Shores we see many Glacier hotels Beyond is the superlatively lovely Lake Josephine and still further on at the base of the Garden Wall is grenell Lake after our aerial view of these Lakes We descend to Earth and to the broad Veranda of many Glacier hotels from which we Feast our eyes upon the varied manifestations of Nature's Artistry now there is time for relaxation provided you can protect yourself from the pleasant distraction of fair ladies bent on mischief [Music] [Applause] [Music] Disciples of good Isaac walon will find much to give them joy in the waters of Glacier Park in streams and lakes reached by saddle horse and hiking trails Wy trout wait hopefully for a chance to out with the fisherman but if your fancy so inclined you can catch a string of bittering fighters from a boat right in front of the hotel the Waters of the park are stocked with rainbows Eastern Brook drought native black spotted drought and grayy with every strike comes a guarantee of a battle to warm the anger's [Music] heart there's the second strike in 5 minutes and remember this is not some isolated Mountain stream but the Waters of Swift Current Lake only a stone throw from your hotel trout are not the only Beauties to be found in the lakes of Glacier Park after a horseback ride a hike or Mountain climb a swim in the accelerating crystal clear water is just the right preparation for an evening of fun when the dancing [Music] begins up with the early birds next morning we're off for a short hike along an inviting Trail to Josephine Lake intoxicating as champagne is the pure Mountain Air you can feel the exciting tingle in your veins as if you had just bathed in some revitalizing Fountain of energy as we emerge from the woods the shore of the lake our eyes Behold a scene so startling in its Majesty that we can scarcely credit our senses there before us lies grenell Glacier cradled on the slope of the Garden Wall this ageless ice is part of the Great glacial blanket that once covered most of America and carved its ancient Hills and Valleys from one of our Ranger naturalists we hear the amazing story of the great Ice Age and the part it played in the creation of this mountain Wonderland from the sublime to the ridiculous from mountains to mole Hills or to be more accurate squirrel holes and why not for these small furry natives are as much a part of vacation land as any Glacier or waterfall according to the girls it's much more fun to feed these fuzzy pets than it is to fool fish with a hook of line All Summer Long the concessionaires at the hotel struggle to maintain their stock of peanuts and All Summer Long visitors and squirrels join forces to reduce the peanut supply to the vanishing point then the visitors go home and the squirrels spend the winter sleeping off their peanut hangover our program for today begins with a trail ride from many Glacier hotel for some of us today marked the Fulfillment of a lifelong ambition to dress up in cowboy regalia even if it takes two to do the job while we're waiting for the start lunch boxes are strapped to our Saddles and the guides make a final checkup of equipment and now we are on our way mounted in comfortable western saddles on gentle Trail wise horses our part of the job of trail riding is to relax and enjoy the scenery while the ponies do the work our destination is grenell Glacier and before us lies an easy 7 Mile ride over winding Forest Trails skirting lakes and ping shallow snow-fed streams as we climb higher and higher up into the [Music] hills well on our way we stopped to look across Josephine lake at massive Mount goon the variety and abundance of wild flowers in Glacier Park is always a surprise to visitors at a bend in the trail high on the mountain side we see a vivid splash of color typical of thousands of Nature's Gardens scattered through the Rockies [Music] our progress along the trail is a series of surprises here the pathway is carved out of solid [Music] rock from this point we look down upon grenell Lake the amazing J green of the water comes from tiny particles of glacial silk carried down from the glacier by Icy streams actually the water is clear as Crystal but from this distance it seems like some giant paint bowl for replenishing the green of forest [Music] leaves now that we are nearing our destination we begin to think about those lunch boxes carefully strapped to Saddles before we left the hotel besides it's just about time to leave our horses and take to the trail which leads up to the foot of the [Music] glacier the Mountain Air has sharpened our appetites and back along the line of riders goes the call when do we eat while we explore the lunch boxes the exciting Aroma proves that every Glacier Park guide has earned his master's degree in coffing [Music] making with lunch stowed away where it will do the most good we are eager to continue our exploration our guide calls a halt beside a huge Rock to show us how glacial action scarred its surface thousands of years ago under the terrific pressure of slow moving masses of ice small stones and Pebbles ground these markings across the face of the rock even today the action of the glacier continues as it did when it carved out the valleys of Glacier Park at the very edge of the glacier we see how the tremendous weight of the ice grinds Solid Rock into small fragments some of which are so fine that they ooze down in a slow continuous stream of glacial [Music] mud at first glance you might think this is a dangerous exploration trip for amers but you are perfectly safe if you watch your step and stay with your [Music] guide just to prove there's nothing to worry about the boys and girls of the party yield to the temptation of soft snow your only Hazard here is an unexpected rub down that seems twice as cold because of the warm Midsummer [Music] Sun few experiences in life can equal the thrill of your first closeup of a glacier for countless centuries this mass of ice has crept slowly downward from the mountain Heights and now it is one of the few remnants of the huge ice cap that once covered a large part of North America even after our visit to grenell Glacier we've only sampled the treasures of Glacier Park there are still many things to be done so we're off again on an observation coach Excursion to see what we can [Music] see as we pass the Swift Current ranger station on our way to the main Park Highway we turn for one final look up the valley with the hope that this will not be our last view of its Splendid vest to our left as we look back along going to the sun highway is beautiful St Mary lake with divide mountain in The Distance by this time you would think that we were immune to surprises but here is a scene entirely new to our eyes Westward up St Mary Valley stretches the sparkling Lake another of this playground's lovely panoramas ahead of us at the foot of Goat Mountain are other motor coaches arriving at going to the sun [Music] Chalet from this Promontory there is a magnificent view in both directions over St Mary [Music] Lake there ahead is Mount Citadel one of the high peaks in the chain that circles the lake and here is majestic going to the Sun Mountain towering 9,584 ft Into the Blue follow any path you like in this mountain Wonderland and you'll soon find yourself gazing upon Vistas repeated nowhere else on [Music] earth below us is a scene that makes us climb down again in a hurry to watch the swimmers the basins that hold these lovely Lakes were hollowed out by glaciers millions of years ago and today they are fed by Cold Waters melted from the same [Music] glaciers when we return to the Chalet we are just in time to see another party preparing for a trail ride through gunsight pass to Lake McDonald wouldn't you like to be going along with them to weave a new pattern of memories from the green the trees the blue of the lakes and the Myriad tints and tones of mountain and [Music] Forest the Kaleidoscope of color in Glacier Park is the Delight of every artist and even the color camera can hardly hope to do it justice particularly brilliant are the flowers which grow in great variety and profusion from the deepest valleys up to the very edges of glaciers and snow fields here for example beside a tiny stream is a cluster of yellow monkey [Music] flowers and here are their colorful cousins red monkey flowers more than 100 different varieties of wild flowers are to be found in the park [Music] aboard an observation coach we're off again for a trip over one of the finest senic roads in the world the famous going to the sun Highway the smooth roadway leads upward until we find ourselves passing through a tunnel board in the solid rock of the Continental Divide [Music] [Applause] a bend in the road reveals a panoramic view Eastward down St Mary Valley from which only about an hour ago our motor coach began its zigzag climb to this high elevation upward and around a few more turns then we arrive at Logan pass the highest point on the highway foot Trails lead to many points of interest above and below the highway near the summit of the pass this is a favorite vantage point for the view Northwest up the Steep side of pan [Music] mountain with an about face we turn in the opposite direction to see Mount Clemens the notch between these two mountains is the only Highway pass between the east and west sections of DEA [Music] Park as we leave Logan pass our Direction is down but our Spirits continue to soar upward in response to the thrilling new scenes which reveal themselves at a breathtaking Pace each new Panorama is the most glorious you have ever seen until you come to the next one this continual state of surprise is one of the most Pleasant features of a vacation in Glacier Park our destination is Lake McDonald hotel at the extreme west side of the park for our stay here we have our choice of attractive hotel rooms or cozy log Cottages along the the shores of the lake whichever we choose the Grandeur of mountain and lake are the borders of our private garden and the Azure Vault of the sky our [Music] ceiling Lake McDonald is the largest in the park and a popular place for all sorts of water sports it is also the starting point for a number of Saddle Horse trips Mountain trail hikes and fishing excursions if you can stand the pace water skiing may turn out to be your favorite diversion as for fish maybe you'd rather be than see one in which case you'll be interested in a glorified swimming hole that beats all your memories of the one back home and besides back home you havn't mount Cannon to stand guard above the horizon maybe you'll say the old Hometown has mermaids to rivales but you'll forgive us if we doubt it because it goes without saying that everything in Glacier Park is more beautiful than anywhere else in the world an hour or two ago these girls were riding down from a glacier and now they're enjoying a swim in sun-warmed [Music] waters the sun of gler Park quickly all good things must unfortunately come to an end and motor coaches are waiting Lake McDonald hotel to take us to the Great Northern station at Belton the Western gateway to Glacier Park soon we will be on our way but our farewell to this lovely vacation land is a happy one for we hope that someday soon we shall return to Glacier and Waterton parks where we have found new friends and gathered so many cherished [Music] memories once more aboard great northern's famous Empire Builder Bound for the Pacific Northwest Spokane Portland Seattle Tacoma Vancouver Victoria or Beyond to Alaska or California our thrilling vacation speed swiftly to an end to
