Description: Canada's trade unionist movement is traced from the early 1800s until the stock market crash of 1929. Various successful labor and socialist alliances of other nations are examined and contrasted with the Canadian experience. Legalized in 1824, Canada's unions became increasingly Americanized throughout the years. This was most evident when the American Federation of Labor took over the Trade and Labor Congress of Canada in 1902 and expelled all other unions. As in the United States, Canada's trade unionists did not turn to socialism to advance their causes. However, seventeen years later, workers in Winnipeg held the most complete general strike in North American industry, and the seed was planted for the formation of the socialist party.
