I Live In Hawaii (1960)

morning Randy war how's the team fine bye daddy morning Randy morning goodbye Dad goodbye Daddy bye bye bye daddy have a good day son bye daddy first thing every morning bye I read the sports page football is my sport hi [Music] Randy hi Sandy David is my best friend not good going to school in Hawaii is about the same as in any state I guess except the little kids get to go barefooted all year [Music] [Music] for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and and justice for all all right class today we've been studying our American Pioneers moving West Transportation now we're studying our own State we're at the crossroads of a busy Ocean Highway in the Hawaiian chain there are eight important Islands we live on aahu in the Capital City Honolulu our islands are the tops of volcanoes that Rose from the ocean floor the lava forms steep mountains and gentle slopes the ocean around us is always about the same warm temperature that helps keep the air temperature even it's like summer all year but not too hot cool winds blow most of the time these are called Trade Winds they bring clouds on the mountaintops we catch the rain and guided in canals it takes much water to grow our main crop sugar cane on drier land we grow pineapples our most important products are sugar cane and pineapples lunchtime at school I guess we talked about the same things you do he was he was real cute and he gave me a I don't know what I'm going to wear today party I haven't got a single thing well I mean figure it this way the Yankees have won the most pennis I mean you can't figure last year this year they much better I still say [Music] the we settle everything with a game we play it's scissors paper rock but we use the Japanese nonsense words now you today we're eating wieners and beans fresh pineapple Japanese rice cakes called Sushi and Hawaiian POI you always eat PO with your fingers for dessert Linda brought a surprise today Chinese almond [Music] cookies Linda's grandmother makes the best things some of our foods are grown right here the rest come from all parts of the country the same as [Music] yours but prices are high because most of these foods have been shipped a long way [Music] ships are our lifelines they bring us food clothing cars most of the things we need going back the same ships carry the products we sell in school we learn about passenger ships too they bring us tourists visitors come on nearly every ship and pl plane that crosses the [Music] Pacific flower lays are an old Hawaiian symbol of friendship oh you are not you guys such we learned to make them in our free time at school oh so do I but we've got other ones too got so many high around there just beautiful at my garden have so many flowers oh look at that so good a wonderful we learned some old Hawaiian hoola dances [Music] too hello [Music] but I like football 10 9 8 7even hi [Applause] [Music] joh K you [Music] show now you show oh I won okay after school we stopped for some Chinese cracked seed they're made of fruit that's been dried like these cherries with spices added come and get it they're sour but good yay y later we go surfing [Music] [Applause] hey let's go [Music] again just a little hula girl in a little gr skirt in a little Shar in Hawaii most of our lifeguards are Hawaiian tourists are surprised at how many Hawaiian words we use when we give directions we say you go so many blocks mauka that means toward the mountains then go toward Diamond Head crater then come back a little maai maai that means toward the ocean the Hawaiian word we use most often aloha means hello goodbye and love we always go home with Dad he works at a big hotel here hi hi Daddy hi Dad says that taking care of tourists gives jobs to many people but most jobs are on this one Island Oahu so most of our people must live here the other islands are only a few minutes away but there are few hotels there and few places to work a side from plantations but now on several islands and here on aahu new hotels and industries these will give work to many people our state is still growing if you came to live on our street I think you'd feel at home hi Momom momy the surf was should have seen Hawaii is very much a part of America [Music] l
