Description: Traces, chronologically, the changes in the American vocabulary from colonial times to the present, pointing out that language is a dynamic process which changes to fit the needs of its users. Presents examples using voice-over narration and reenactments to show how early English settlers borrowed words from the Indians and French, Dutch, and Spanish settlers. Illustrates events in American history for which new words were developed including westward movement and the gold rush. Pictures events in the 20th century such as immigration, city life, and industrial growth which affected vocabulary.
