Description:
Description: Early 1930s farm life of a multigenerational family with love for the game of horseshoes. Ends with a polo game and a surreal sequence of a man sleeping in a grassy lawn.
Leader notes: "Farm- before marriage / Aunt Annie / [Carihage] Fair]"
Legacy screening notes: late 1920s country life with horseback riding, fancy clothes, intellectuals, Cloche hats, flapper dresses, jodhpurs, sailor suits, bow ties, and drinking during Prohibition; particular sequences include a long game of horseshoes, scenes around a barn where drinking is probably going on inside; notable feature is this large group of adults (10 - 12 people) with just two children: probably a family together with a large circle of friends from college (one wears a collegiate sweater, another wears rimless spectacles implying an intellectual life): drinking beer, playing with German Shepherds, riding in wheelbarrow, class divisions also on display in this reel, when a farmhand joins the main subjects for the horseshoe game, highlighting their clean clothes. African American domestic labor is shown. Also a horse and buggy race at a track, a game of polo, and an unusual theater sequence, live entertainment at the race track, with people variously costumed as scary clowns and monkeys perform gymnastic theatrics. Image quality very good, for c. 1928.
