Description: Home from the Sea is a short U.S. Navy film that shows several of the famous U.S. warships—the USS Constitution, Niagara, Kairo, Olympia, Texas, North Carolina, Missouri, and Arizona—and where they rest today. The film opens with shots of wrecked ships. An illustration shows the warship Constitution, the ship’s captains Edward Preble, Isaac Hull, and William Bainbridge. There are illustrations of the ship in combat, and old photographs show the ship as it is being restored. Footage shows the restored vessel at its home in the Navy Shipyard in Boston (1:40). Next, the film shows the USS Niagara (02:08), the relief flagship for Oliver Hazard Perry. Footage shows the ship’s canons on the deck as it is docked at the Erie Maritime Museum in Erie, PA. Viewers see the leftover wreckage of the USS Cairo (02:55). Photographs show the Civil War-era ship, and the remains of the ship after it was raised from the Yazoo River. Next, the film covers the cruiser USS Olympia (03:24). Illustrations show Commodore George Dewey and the ship as it fights in Manila Bay. The next ship showcased in the film is the USS Texas (03:54), which is shown sails at sea as part of the British Grand Fleet during WWI. Footage shows it during Operation Overlord; viewers see the ship’s guns firing on German targets. Soldiers wade to Normandy’s shore. The film then shows the old warship as it rests at the San Jacinto Battleground Monument. An aerial view shows the USS North Carolina (05:17), the 35-ton super-dreadnaught. Footage shows the Japanese surrender to Allied forces on 2 September 1945 on the deck of the Missouri (06:45). The film then cuts to footage of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the sinking of the USS Arizona (07:18). An aerial view shows the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. The film concludes with shots of the ships featured in the short film. USS Constitution, also known as Old Ironsides, is a wooden-hulled, three-masted heavy frigate of the United States Navy named by President George Washington after the United States Constitution. USS Niagara, commonly called the US Brig Niagara or the Flagship Niagara, is a wooden-hulled snow-brig that served as the relief flagship for Oliver Hazard Perry in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. USS Cairo was one of the first American ironclad warships built at the beginning of the U.S. Civil War. Cairo was the lead ship of the City-class gunboats and named for Cairo, Illinois. USS Olympia (C-6/CA-15/CL-15/IX-40) is a protected cruiser that saw service in the United States Navy from her commissioning in 1895 until 1922. This vessel became famous as the flagship of Commodore George Dewey at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish–American War in 1898. USS Texas (BB-35), the second ship of the United States Navy named in honor of the U.S. state of Texas, is a New York-class battleship. The ship was launched on 18 May 1912 and commissioned on 12 March 1914. USS North Carolina (BB-55) is the lead ship of the North Carolina class of fast battleships, the first vessel of the type built for the United States Navy. Built under the Washington Treaty system, North Carolina's design was limited in displacement and armament, though the United States used a clause in the Second London Naval Treaty to increase the main battery from the original armament of nine 14-inch (360 mm) guns to nine 16 in (410 mm) guns. USS Missouri (BB-63) ("Mighty Mo" or "Big Mo") is an Iowa-class battleship and was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named after the U.S. state of Missouri. Missouri was the last battleship commissioned by the United States and is best remembered as the site of the surrender of the Empire of Japan which ended World War II. USS Arizona was a Pennsylvania-class battleship built for and by the United States Navy in the mid-1910s. Named in honor of the 48th state's recent admission into the union, the ship was the second and last of the Pennsylvania class of "super-dreadnought" battleships.

[Music] where are they now the great ships many gone to sailor's Graves Savaged by Decay and rust gone to scrap and yet here and there almost miraculously private citizens the American Navy The American Nation have met managed to preserve a few of the great [Music] [Applause] ships Constitution launched in 1797 she was one of the fastest warships of her time and her captains among the greatest of all Navy Heroes Edward prebel commanded her in the war with the barbre pirates with Isaac Hull commanding she destroyed the British guier in 1812 William Banbridge commanded Constitution into battle against the Royal Navy's Java later that same year by now she was old iron sides to her crew and to all Americans as she won and won again against an enemy Superior only in [Music] numbers the years passed by and old irons sides was taken in and out of AC Ive service used as a training ship then a receiving ship and finally restored to her past glory and put on display for the entire nation at the Navy shipyard at Boston to walk her decks is to walk through American history almost from the days of our first president and the fragile dangerous times of the new nation Constitution is the oldest Navy ship still in commission and one of the proudest symbols of America's [Music] Heritage near the Waters of Lake Erie at Erie Pennsylvania is the brig Niagara not far off these Shores the Niagara commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry was engaged in the most acclaimed naval battle of the War of 1812 on that day her riggings were filled with Kentucky Riflemen and her gunnels with Gallant Sailors after losing one ship Paris bordered the Niagara and charged the British battle line such a merciless fire was poured upon the enemy ships they soon surrendered and from the deck of Niagara Perry sent his famous message we have met the enemy and they are ours this is the Koo what's left of her Koo is a relic of the days when the American Navy cruised and fought Inland on the vast river system of the Mississippi during the terrible years of the Civil War she was raised from the yazu river in 1956 and plans have been made for her restoration as a National Monument the nation's oldest surviving steel warship is the cruiser Olympia in 1898 she was Admiral George dy's Flagship when dwey then a commodore LED his Squadron pass the Spanish batteries on corgador and into Manila Bay fin by 1:00 in the afternoon Spain no longer had a fleet in the Philippines and today Olympia rests proudly in [Music] Philadelphia the year was 1912 the ship th000 ton Battleship Texas a ship destined to be in the middle of the action in service with the British Grand Fleet in the first world war on Convoy escort in the North Atlantic at the outbreak of World War II she was in the thick of the invasion of North Africa in 1942 then on the 6th of June 1944 Texas joined the greatest air Land and Sea invasion of [Applause] History l off Omaha Beach she pounded the German Shore positions the naval Firepower helped carry the day without that gunfire said an army Chief of Staff we could not have crossed the [Music] beaches after the Normandy invasion and the invasion of Southern France Texas departed for the Pacific to join in the battle for iojima then Okinawa the old warship was awarded five Battle Stars and many other honors she rests today at the Sano Battlefield Monument near [Music] Houston while Texas was on patrol in 1941 in the Atlantic this great ship was just being commissioned North Carolina the first of the Navy's 35,000 ton super dreadnots at that time one of the mightiest warships of float her crew called her the showboat North Carolina winner of 12 Battle Stars and part of the major Naval campaigns in the Pacific today in Wilmington North Carolina she tells her own story in a proud display of her colorful history check fire up one o left 6 o commence firing ceas fire one of the last American battleships was the 45,000 ton Missouri she lies in Reserve at the Naval Shipyard in Bremington near Seattle in Puget Sound on this great ship on September 2nd at 9:00 a.m. 1945 Imperial Japan formally surrendered to the Allied Powers we will now hear Fleet Admiral Chester W nitz commanderin-chief of the United States Pacific Fleet on board all Naval vessels at Sea and port and at our many Island bases in the Pacific there is rejoicing and Thanksgiving the long and bitter struggle is it an end the war that ended on the Missourri began here flash Washington the White House announces Japanese attack on Pearl Harper the enduring symbol of that attack is this ship Arizona blown apart when her magazines exploded and sunk almost instantly along with 1100 of her crew now her Hull remains at the harbor bottom beneath this Memorial to the Lost men and the great ship [Music] [Applause] today throughout our nation we can relive our proud Heritage through the enduring presence of these and many other great ships now home from the [Music] sea
