[Music] most of us take fresh air for granted but some people have to work for it every lungful they breathe specially processed These Are the officers and Men Of Her Majesty's submarine conqueror their ship is nuclear ped but conventionally armed the captain has under his Comm a dozen officers and 100 men all housed in a 20 million steel home three stories high the engines on a nuclear sub don't need to breathe oxygen like their diesel driven predecessors their Sinister Merit is that they can Patrol the depths for 3 months without resurfacing but what about the men encapsulated in their strange Mini World in an enclosed space it's easy to pollute the atmosphere smoking produces carbon monoxide 100 ml per cigarette the food on submarines is lavish but the galy equipment needed to keep it that way can produce atmospheric problems of its own and even routine working gulps up oxygen at almost a cubic foot per man per hour reduced oxygen levels can mean reduced efficiency in the machine packed holes of the sub are the atmosphere purifiers each geared to kill off or clean up some pollutant this is the carbon dioxide scrubber a special compound absorbs CO2 when cold and boils it off when [Music] hot if you're going to be isolated for months at a time you're going to need a lot of food eating well is a Submariner particular pleasure but that food has got to be refrigerated the fridge gas fron can leak into the atmosphere fron is not a hazard itself but can mingle with cigarette smoke and other gases to produce poisonous acids so an analyzer is needed to check levels a nuclear submarine makes its own oxygen control electrolyzer I'm going to start the electrolyzer through gills in the hull the sub draws water from the sea and electrolyzes it to produce oxygen and hydrogen the hydrogen is discharged the oxygen is pumped through the length of the ship conqueror's control room at the moment of truth she's ready to dive from the order stop inducing the crew is breathing the subzone sealed atmosphere all outside sources cut off cut Ser functional checks correct permission to stop inducing stop inducing stop inducing inducing shut we now ready to dive we are ready to dive the walk C the bridge come below and shut the upper lid I have the sh clear the bridge come below and shut the upper lid the captain sh Bo come below diving now diving now open main B open main main V main V open Roger five down five down five down one de bow down this is a d4y the officer G away now 30 okay 40t blood the mood the M Roger 50 ft the trouble with the various atmosphere checks so far is that each has dealt with a specific pollutant the most recent Aid in conqueror's clean air policy is more comprehensive this analyzer can give information about nine possible pollutants from one centralized unit 12 sniffers are built into various parts of the submarine so a constant atmospheric check could be made from stem to stem the sniffer takes a mixed sample and the analyzer breaks it down into separate components and gives a reading the first chart shows carbon monoxide and fron here carbon monoxide is running at 28 parts per million not serious but higher enough to require action the second panel records hydrocarbons the sniffers feed a third panel which shows carbon dioxide hydrogen and oxygen levels the four early log thus gives a complete survey of the submarines atmospheric state of health the figures are transferred to the control room chart that Freon and carbon monoxide will have to be reported Dan sir Captain sir 4 hourly atmosphere report uh we have a high preon level which is stabilizing now the leaks have been found fine uh we also have a high carbon monoxide level which is 28 parts per milon sir I suggest we reduce smoking for approximately 4 hours right uh your action is to uh switch in the Ford CO2 burner right away Roger sir thank you you hear there captain speaking we have a temporarily high carbon monoxide level I anticipate getting normal level in the next four hours however in the metime I must down to a one around basis that is all so a temporary smoking ban while the carbon monoxide is burned off in the Torpedo Room another air purifier converts the gas to carbon dioxide and it's [Music] removed a patrol over conqueror is nearing home Bas the emergence of the nuclear submarine has brought atmosphere control to a new refinement the Hollywood heroics of oxygen star submarinas is Fading Into folklore the modern submarine with modern technology can breathe more freely
