Description: Describes the images evoked upon mention of the 1920s: jazz, champagne baths, John Held flappers, gang killings--in short, an era of rampant, glamorous decadence. Shows that the frantic thrill-searching of the "lost generation" takes on a somewhat different flavor when described by the pens of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and other Left Bank expatriates. Describes the small town, its traditions and manners still relatively untouched as presenting still another picture of the decade. Shows that each of these represents an alternate truth about the times and points out that it is only when we view history from many vantage points that we are able to achieve an undistorted, objective account and gain a perspective that avoids the pitfalls of our cherished stereotypes.
