Description:

The 1968 educational short Handwriting for Beginners - Manuscript blends handwriting instruction with a whimsical fairy tale. Produced by Coronet, the film follows a boy with exceptional penmanship who, despite being cursed with an evil pencil by a magician, triumphs in a handwriting contest. His skill earns him not only victory but also the hand of a princess and, eventually, the throne. While intended to teach children proper manuscript-writing techniques, the film’s delightfully absurd storyline adds an unexpected charm.

[Music] the children in my class are working hard to improve their handwriting some of them are doing almost as well as the boy with the beautiful handwriting who is he well listen while I tell them a story about handwriting it begins once upon a time there was a small Kingdom called the land of alphabet behind a beautiful gate was the castle where the king lived the king of alphabet was often busy in his Great Hall you see the king could do something better than any other king in the world even his friend King Arthur with all his bravery and King Midas with all his gold couldn't do this thing as well the king of alphabet had worked very hard to make his handwriting the most beautiful to behold now the king had a daughter but no son the man the princess married would one day Rule the Kingdom the king hoped that he would also have a beautiful handwriting but how could the king be sure and then one day an idea came to him and soon afterwards all the kingdom learned the news there would be a great contest to find the young man with the most beautiful handwriting the man who would marry the princess all over the Kingdom in every house of every village young men began practicing for the [Music] contest now deep in a dark forest was the house of an evil magician the magician was certain he would win the contest for he had a Magic Pencil with it he could write better than anyone except perhaps for one boy the one who was called the boy with the beautiful handwriting but the magician had a plan you see he also owned another Magic Pencil this was an evil one anyone who wrote with this evil pencil would write so badly that he could never win the contest so the magician disguised himself as a pencil seller and set out for the house of the boy with a beautiful handwriting just outside the Dark Forest where the magician lived was a Green Meadow here was the cottage of the boy with the beautiful handwriting inside the boy was busy practicing his handwriting just as most of the other young men in the Kingdom were so he didn't hear the evil magician come in when the magician looked at the boy's paper he could see why he had earned the name the boy with the beautiful handwriting he did indeed write beautifully then the magician showed the pencils he had for sale but the boy was too poor to buy any of them so the magician said because the boy wrote so well he would give him a gift a beautiful pencil but of course the boy didn't know this was the evil pencil the magician just wanted the boy to promise that he would use the pencil in the contest but not before and the boy agreed the magician was certain now that he would win it was easy to see why the boy had such a beautiful handwriting he sat straight he put the paper in good writing position and held his pencil comfortably and how well he could make his letters all his capital letters were the same height a little less than one space High all the tall letters were just as tall as his capitals his te's were a little shorter he made his straight lines as straight as he could and when he wrote numerals he made them the same height as his capitals he didn't mind practicing he made all his halfspace letters the same height he made the round letters as round as he could every halfspace letter just touched the lines it wasn't over a line or under a line when he made a letter that needed a DOT he put the dot right over the letter and he made sure that letters with Tails all went the same distance below the line he always wrote round letters close together he wrote round and straight line letters close together too where there was a t in a word he made sure the next letter didn't touch the CR sa on the tea and he made sure that tall thin letters like two L's weren't too close together or too far apart and when he wrote a sentence he left a space about as wide as a small o between every word how he hoped he would win the contest soon the day of the contest came all the young men of the Kingdom had come to the palace and were waiting in line for their turn to enter the Great Hall the king and the princess watched from their Thrones The Princess saw many young men come by that day then far at the end of the hall she saw the boy with the beautiful handwriting he was next to lass when he saw the princess more than ever he wanted to win he was glad he had a beautiful pencil to write with behind the boy the last in line was the evil magician he had brought the other Magic Pencil at last all had written except the boy and the magician now it was the boy's turn first he was given a piece of paper to practice on now he began to use the evil pencil for the first time but something was wrong the magician knew what it was when the boy began to write the evil pencil made his posture poor because of the pencil's evil enchantment he couldn't get the paper in the right position or hold the pencil the way he wanted to and oh the way he wrote something was certainly wrong the princess was very unhappy now practice time was over even though it seemed he couldn't have good posture he made himself sit right even though it seemed his fingers couldn't hold the pencil properly he made them hold it right and then working as carefully as he could he began to write he put to work all the skills he had the magician could hardly believe what he saw could the evil pencil have let the boy write so well the magician was sure he had given the boy the wrong pencil as soon as the boy had finished he seized the pencil and without even practicing he began to write but of course this was the evil pencil and because the magician had never learned good handwriting skills he could not control it as the boy had done the magician had tricked himself and not the boy he left and never returned again with one look at the boy's handwriting it was clear he had won the contest how happy the boy was for he had loved the princess at first sight so he married the princess and many years later he became the king of alphabet the people loved him and forever after they called him the boy with a beautiful handwriting [Music] and so I finished telling the children the story now we know that everyone can't write as well as the boy with the beautiful handwriting but we can all try to make our handwriting neater and easier to read with good posture and good paper position the children hold their pencils correctly and right [Music] in this way the children of my room practice their handwriting they're beginners now but they know that by practicing carefully they can all be better writers they all want to have a nice handwriting don't you
