Guernica, cultural center of the Basques, was bombed on April 26, 1937 resulting in 2,000 deaths. Resnais uses Picasso's large painting to depict the horrors of war. Each isolated fragment of the fresco presents a graphic image of suffering. Guernica seemed to us the manifestation of the will to destroy for the pleasure of destroying.
