GRAND TOUR

This elaborate 1970s film "Grand Tour" promotes Pan American World Airways. The airline takes viewers on short tours through London, Paris, Florence and Rome, with each segment featuring a different individual. Pan Am at the time was the largest international air carrier in the world. The film was created by screen writer Ann Eisner, and directed by Lee Bobker, founder of Vision Associates. The film opens with a shot of a 747 passenger plane (Pan Am was the launch customer of the Boeing 747, placing a $525 million order for 25 in April 1966.) The traditional symbol for the airline; the globe with "Pan Am’ written across is captured on the tail. Big Ben appears at (:17). Another famed icon of London is the AEC Routemaster (:30); the brilliant red double decker bus. The first scene opens with a woman called "Alannah Tandy" discussing the style and life in London (1:19). A montage ensues of modern London streets with colorful and fashionable inhabitants moving through the streets and shops (1:35). The film turns to old London (2:20). A dairy shop; rebuilt in 1667, hangs within the narrow alley pointing to the rich history of the area (2:25). Old taverns and draft houses are pointed out such as ‘The Green Man’ and ‘French Horn’ (2:32). Restaurants and shops such as "The Shakespeare’s Head" flick by (2:43). A poster for the Regents Park Open Air Theater shows an opera and ballet in the summer 1969 (2:47). David Henry Conville presented the showings. Conville was a British actor and director at the open air theater (2:51). This theater is set in the Covent Garden district in London. Scenes from one of the showings follow (3:11). Alannah takes photographs of models for work (3:20) with famous landmarks behind them such as the Tower Bridge (3:26). She points to the link between London and fashion (3:37). Evening festivities are looked to as locals gather at a restaurant for food and refreshments (4:39). The sunset falls over the village of Harbridge as locals enjoy evening wine (5:20). Tourists and locals enjoy an evening on the Grand Boulevard (10:09). Maxim’s; an evening staple, is a French classics restaurant at an Art Nouveau institution established in 1893 (10:59). The Arc de Triomphe is captured at sunset (12:03). A sculptor tells viewers of the beauty of Florence (12:24). The Ponte Vecchio (13:56) over the Arno River. Faces of stone sculptures (14:33). The Cathedral of Florence follows (15:53). Locals meander through Via de Tornabuoni (16:27); the famed shopping street. A goldsmith works on pieces of gold jewelry (16:48). We go to Rome (19:45) to capture the Castel Sant’Angelo (19:49). The guide, a photographer for a newspaper, snaps photographs of a woman painting (20:18). Shots follow of a large open market (20:24). A newlywed couple gets their photographs taken with the famed Coliseum in the background (20:55). The Piazza di Spagna (21:11) follows. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] London's fun and amusing. It's exciting. It's also hard work. There's lots of stimulation. You have the very, very way out there in London. I find great stimulation from all sort of clothes that I see in the shops when I wander around London. Also from the people that I see wandering around the streets [Music] Data. [Music] Heat. [Music] I enjoy wandering around looking at some of the old streets of London. Just wandering around gives one great atmosphere and stimulation. There is great atmosphere in London. [Music] [Applause] [Music] I also like the very smart places. I love going to Covent Garden. I adore that opera and ballet there. If you turn not, you will return the sooner. Keep this remembrance for thy Julia's sake. Why then we'll make exchange. here. Take you this and seal the bargain with a holy kiss. Of course, when one's taking shots of models around London, it's fun if one can include in the background um historical London such as Big Ben and Tar Bridge. This sort of includes the city of London as well as linking it with fashion which I think goes across to people very well. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. At night in London, I love going to restaurants where you see amusing people, but you see film people, you see actors, you see designers, and you see the way out people who add quite a lot of amusement. [Music] [Music] The city in the evening with all the lights on is great fun looking at the city at Harbor Bridge sunset. It's very romantic. [Music] London is a very exciting city. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Paris. Paris is always for me a city for lovers, a city of sunlight and shadow. I think you can go nowhere in Paris without being aware of a kind of Roma that is the heart of the city. [Music] [Applause] [Music] I am a chef in one of the great restaurants of Paris. For me uh to create a great meal is to create a work of art. The seasoning that flavor a superb filt of soul. The light delicate aroma of a superb sauce. Everything with a very light touch. It comes from the heart. It is for me not work but pleasure. [Music] Everywhere I go in Paris, I uh how do you say? I I feel the city. [Applause] [Music] For those who live in Paris and those who come to Paris, food is very important. A launch, a journey. It is not rushed. One takes his time and lingers a little and learns to enjoy what is good in life. [Music] I think it was Mier who said uh good food, good wine, good company is all a man need to be happy. [Music] As I said, it is an art. [Music] I think um my favorite time of day in Paris is just before evening on the great boulevards. There is such a great sense of life of pleasure [Music] and I think it comes from that special light that makes this city so different from all the cities in the world. In Paris, you can dine well in so many different kinds of restaurants. In small, inexpensive bistro, in boulevard cafes, and in beautiful restaurants all over the city. [Music] Well, of course, no evening in Paris is complete without a great experience that is Maxim's [Music] It is not just a great restaurant. Oh, no. It is much much more. [Music] So you see what I mean when I say my work, my art, my city are all one thing, one thing together. in Florence. There are many beautiful hidden things. The harmony of the houses, the rapport that there is between the human figures, the human dimension in the buildings, not only the more beautiful, more famous works of architecture like Santa Maria del Fior, Santa Maria Nolla. It is also the same with little houses. The houses where modest people live. There is a dimension so proportioned to the human dimension that creates in Florence a marvelous atmosphere. Perhaps I should not say this because I am Florentine, but I think that it is so. And I think that the tourists, the foreigners who are not from Florence must find this particularly those who come to Florence to study. [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] Hallelujah. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] The Goldsmiths are very important New Florence. Their work is very very much closer to works of true art than you can find in other cities. Sculpture and music. Fortunately in Florence we have an important musical life. [Music] Then there is another part of the artist. It is the work itself. the possibility to be able to express certain ideas that the artist has. [Music] In my work, I try to convey a feeling of harmony and peace. If we don't have those things during our life, we look for them. [Music] [Applause] [Music] I think Rome is a woman. She's very beautiful, very charming, a little temperamental of course, but uh always changing. I am a paparazzo, how you call um a news photographer. My business is stories about people, famous people, important people, sometimes just people. But that Yeah. Yeah. [Music] Here, [Music] here, here. [Music] If you go to the great hotels of Rome and sit by the swimming pool, you find good pictures, good stories. [Music] [Applause] [Music] At 5:00 in the afternoon every day, all of Rome comes to the cafe Dhoni on the Venetto. So I am here always with my camera uh which tells the story of all the interesting people one can find in Rome. [Music] [Applause] [Music] At night, I go to the little restaurants, um, the inexpensive ones, the tratoria for the The best food in all Rome. Spaghetti, oco, chupo, depe and a great red wine. [Applause] My life, my work is the life of the city. Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] The nicest thing is to go through Vienna on a Sunday morning in June or May uh in a fiaka. This is the horse carriage. Two horses and a very old-fashioned carriage. You have the man who is uh driving this and he's explaining everything to you in a very bad English. [Music] Vienna for me easily because I am a singer is music. Always when I come back to Vienna, I feel that you can do the music here so well because the air is full of tradition. [Music] We feel ground [Music] Break [Music] my heart [Music] [Applause] [Music] and [Music] I never [Music] There's one famous famous pastry shop. This is D. And we all love every piece of D because when you make a present and you say this is from D, you never can go wrong. And it's always wonderful. [Music] We have of course the fashionable Franciscana. This is a restaurant like a home and you can sit in small rooms and you get the most lovely vianese dishes.
