Giant Mobile: Nature in Balance (1974)

Heat. Heat. I hope my class will understand this experiment. Heat. Heat. Hey everybody. There you go. They know that the soil that feeds us is created by the forces of nature, the sun, the wind, the rain. But they don't realize how difficult it is to keep those forces in balance. And it's vital that we do maintain that balance if we hope to keep the land productive, to satisfy the increasing demands of our people. When farmers plow and plant their fields, they usually follow the shape of the land. This is called contour farming. It helps keep the soil from being washed away called erosion. and it stops the rain from running off the land, keeping it in fields for growing crops. When the soil doesn't wash away, lakes and streams stay cleaner and they are less likely to flood. Many farmers plant different crops in the same field in strips. They call it strip cropping. The different crops have different growing seasons. That way there are crops growing on the land most of the year. This helps keep wind and water from taking the soil away. Farmers in the western plain states plant grows of trees next to their fields. The trees are called windbreaks. They're another way of protecting the soil from being blown away by wind. They provide a home for birds and animals which eat insects and rodents which might otherwise eat the crops. Stay out. Thank you. Farmers have learned how to grow more and more food on their land. And they have to because the population of the world is growing. And there's more people to feed and we can't make more land. What the farmers do to get more and bigger crops is add nourishment or nutrients to the soil as fertilizer. Farmers also protect crops from weeds and insects and diseases with modern crop chemicals. Many farmers rotate crops, too. They change the kind of crops on fields each year or so to help control insect and disease buildup. It's very important that farmers keep on strengthening and conserving the soil. It's the only way we'll all have enough food to eat. Do it. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Oh, If anybody knows how how to put nature in balance and keep it that way. It's the farmer. Sure, he's learned how to conserve the land and protect the environment so he can bring in an abundant harvest every year. It's his livelihood, but it's also our life and the future of us all. Hello. Heat. I don't know. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. Heat. The farmer lives and works with nature. And he's the one man who really knows how to keep it all in balance. He has to cuz we need food to live and he needs healthy land to stay in business. The farmer knows how to put it all together with contour farming and strip cropping with windbreaks and crop rotation with soil nutrients and weed insect and disease control. That's the best way to strengthen and conserve the soil and the best way to grow more and bigger crops. And that's the way the farmer does it for his benefit and for ours.
