I don't like it mother neither do I but I have to unpack you'll have to figure it out for yourself oh I'll just call her Kitty until I think of something well the kitten finally did get a name it was six months later she'd grown quite a bit the expression on her face was serious as if she had important things on her mind she walked in a very dignified way and her 23 toes made her paws look like fat little white boots and of course she could speak now maybe you think cats say meow and nothing but meow well if that's what you think you're wrong and people who own cats know it anyway Madeleine and her mother could understand everything the cat said for instance Mrs cookie was trying to fix her hair a new way and the cat told her how to do it speaking slowly and kindly sometimes she would visit the kitchen and tell Susie how to cook a certain dish just a few helpful words of course well one day a Dreadful thing happened the telephone rang someone was calling from Madeline's school a clumsy boy had jumped on her foot and she was badly hurt Mrs cookie got into a taxi and arrived at the school a few minutes later Madeline was crying because of the pain they stopped at the doctors but he wasn't in so they hurried home and Mrs cookie began to bathe Madeline's foot in a basin of warm water the cat came in and watched everything all that water to the most hottest man keeps soaking her foot now hurry Mrs cookie hurried the treatment was absolutely right and Madeleine's foot began to feel better after a while The Cat Came closer and took a long careful look bones broken thank goodness well Madeleine thought the cat sounded and acted just like a doctor oh and from that day on everybody called her Dr Katz time passed quickly and soon it was spring certain sounds had been puzzling Dr Katz the past few days they made her feel itchy and Restless she didn't know the sounds were made by birds but she did know those sounds made her feel like hunting well the only Mouse in the apartment was a catnip mouse that was fun but Dr Katz was never fooled by it She chased it and jumped on it and pushed it around but a Hunter wants something that can fight back well that morning Dr Katz was sitting on the windowsill in the back room which was Madeleine's bedroom suddenly she understood what the sounds were they were Birds she almost Twisted her head off trying to follow the birds with her eyes as they flew from one branch to another on a tree outside the window Dr Katz often sat there and that window was kept tightly closed it bothered her and she said so why am I want to open this window and let me get those birds there they go making their annoying sounds makes me feel foolish just give me a chance and I'll show you what a great hunter I am naughty doctor cats I'm going to keep that window closed now you get back to your catnip Mouse but the next morning after Madeleine had gone to school Dr Katz waited by the window until Mrs cookie came in oh [Music] Pat it is a bit stuffy in here I suppose I might open the window just an inch or two there that ought to be safe enough Dr Katz sniffed the fresh Breeze that came through Mrs cookie turned to leave the room and Dr Katz gave her a sweet smile the door closed Dr cat stuck her nose under the window very much to her surprise it moved up easily a moment later she was outside on the balcony actually outside now remember this was her first time outside since she was rescued on the road she looked around and sniffed mmm so many interesting smells she decided she would find out about those later right now she was more interested in the birds and the birds were interested in Dr Katz they weren't afraid of her they knew she couldn't fly so they acted very brave and those with Bad Manners made faces at her Dr Katz told herself she wasn't going to put up with any such nonsense with a mighty spring she was off flying through the air as if she herself were a bird off like an arrow aiming for one special bird who had just made a very ugly face suddenly she had a terrible feeling she needed wings but cats don't have wings and Dr Katz was dropping to the sidewalk many stories below she was afraid she was going to have a lot of pain she closed her eyes so she wouldn't see when she hit the ground but her front claws touched something it was a branch of the tree she reached wildly but kept slipping downward she couldn't get her claws hooked into anything then at last her claws took hold she hardly dared to breathe she made her way along the branch to the trunk of the tree and you can't blame her for what followed she let loose with her loudest and wildest yowling [Music] Such Noise hadn't been heard in that quiet neighborhood for years Windows began to open people began to throw old shoes at Dr Katz Mrs cookie hurried to the back of her apartment never dreaming the noise was being made by Dr Katz she found the open window and understood there was Dr Katz halfway up the tree howling his no cat ever howled before she really had frightened the birds they had flown away fast but you know how it is with a cat it can climb to the top of the tallest tree but getting down is another matter it has to have help to do that Dr Katz decided she would keep right on Yelling until help came well Mrs cookie was worried it was almost time for Madeline to come home from school and it would break her heart to see the awful fix Dr Katz was in oh dear something has to be done but from the fire department the fire chief answered and Mrs cookie told him that Dr Katz simply had to be rescued at once Dr Katz did you say ma'am earlier where is the fire what floor is it on hey can the doctor be kept away from the Flames until the engines get there no no you don't understand Dr Katz is a cat a very nice cat with 23 toes she's trapped in a tree and she's complaining very loudly please Chief bring your ladders at once before Madeline gets home soon the hook and ladder company came racing down the street with the siren making the kind of noise that gives you Goose pimples then the firemen jumped off the truck pulled down their longest ladder put it up against the tree and ran up as easily as if they were running on the sidewalk Dr Katz didn't know they'd come to help she thought they wanted to catch her and punish her after all she had been naughty fooling mother opening the window in that Sly way and going out on the balcony to frighten those innocent Birds so Dr Katz took a quick look at the men and ran up higher the firemen couldn't reach her their tallest ladders weren't tall enough so they got back on the ground and talked about it for a while now Madeleine had joined the crowd and she was crying then one Brave fireman had a good idea up the ladder he went and when he got to the end he started climbing up the branches but he was no match for Dr Katz she climbed until there was nothing else to hold on to there she was swaying on the last tip of the last branch and the fireman got hold of the branch and shook it that did it with a howl Dr Katz felt herself falling down she went and fast too it was terrible then she landed but what was this why was she still alive she felt wobbly but she wasn't even hurt they had caught her in a life-saving net one of the firemen lifted her up and put her into Madeleine's outstretched arms nobody scolded Dr Katz she had suffered enough they knew she would never do that again Dr Katz had learned to know the cookie family very well she noticed that whenever an argument was going on between Mrs cookie and Madeline Mr cookie always got into a safe corner behind his newspaper well this wasn't really an argument they were just excited about something but there was Mr cookie behind his morning times Tom will you please stop reading that old paper and take some interest in your own family Mr cookie put down his paper and looked up well what do you think of Madeleine's idea Mr cookie hadn't been listening he didn't know what I do Mrs cookie was talking about what's on your mind Madeleine well Daddy there's going to be a cat show at the Royal Hotel in about 10 days the paper says it's for just plain cats not the expensive kinds but each one must have some special point to be admitted um but what's there about doctor cats that would get her into a cat show oh forget it darling that's what I thought Tom but Daddy don't you remember Dr Katz has 23 toes oh yeah so she has but would the show people think that was special enough wait now I'll telephone Anne and see what she thinks she knows all about Cat shows oh mother that's a wonderful idea Mrs cookie called the number hello Ann and there's a cat show coming up at the Royal Hotel just plain cats but with something special about them Madeleine wants to enter Dr Katz hmm yes that's what Madeleine says thanks Ann goodbye Madeline Anne says they'll take Dr Katz and be glad to have her in the show she might even win a blue ribbon oh wouldn't that be wonderful wonder the whole World almost would know about Dr Katz so the next day Mr cookie stopped by the Royal Hotel for an entry blank and that night Madeline filled it out where it said what distinguishing characteristics does your cat possess which means what's different about your cat Madeleine wrote it has 23 toes and she wrote the name in full Dr kitty cats a few days later the postman brought a letter which said that Dr Katz had been accepted for the show or what they didn't do to that cap during the next few days they sprinkled it with different kinds of powder from the cat and dog store they brushed its fur for hours they bought a book called how to prepare your cat for a show they gave her special food so that her fur would be shiny now this was all very disturbing to Dr Katz she didn't quite understand about the show but she did know something strange was going on it broke in on the happy comfortable way she usually spent her time and she didn't like it well Dr Katz did something terrible she disappeared after a while Mrs cookie began to miss her Dr Cat Dr Cat now where can that cat be she rattled Dr Katz's dish which usually brought her running but still no sign of Dr Katz Mrs cookie searched every corner of the apartment the windows are all down and the doors are all closed I bet she's hiding Mrs cookie kept on looking but Dr Katz couldn't be found now she was terribly upset she telephone Mr cookie but he couldn't think of one place she hadn't already looked she called the superintendent and all the men who worked in the apartment house well they searched too but when Madeleine came home from school Dr Katz was still missing Madeline called up the city hall and the mayor himself came to the phone oh I'm very sorry my dear but I can't help you call up the uh the home for Stray Cats Madeline did and they promised to be on the lookout for Dr Katz well two days passed during those two days Madeleine made no progress in school she might just as well have stayed home then the day before the cat show was to open Mrs cookie was going down in the elevator and Herman the elevator man had an idea oh Mrs cookie I'm so sorry you have lost your cat you know I heard Mrs Telly say they'd like to get rid of tails they're an apartment 6B you know if you find a cat they might give it to you maybe well it might take Madeline's mind off Dr Katz so she stopped off at apartment 6B and rang the bell Mrs Terry was a plump smiling woman who liked to talk a lot she had never met Mrs cookie so she tried to make up for it by being friendly oh yes indeed Mrs cookie we want to give away a cat nice cat too real smart and we don't want her you want her yes I'd be glad to have her Mrs Terry left for a moment and came back holding a cat she put it into Mrs Cookie's arms Mrs cookie took one look and couldn't believe her eyes it was Dr Katz and she looked very guilty Mrs cookie thanked her neighbor and didn't ask her to explain she hurried to her own apartment and waited for Dr Katz to do that Dr Katz pretended to be sorry I was kind of the idea of going into that kept pulling over me I thought if I went away until after the show you would understand and forgive me oh I waited in the kitchen until the grocery boy came and I slipped out I walked down the back stairway until I saw an open door I went in it turned out to be the Terrace apartment they are nice people but the truth is I'm glad to be back how's Madeline I suppose she didn't mind missing the cat show now look don't get any more ideas the cap show is not over and you're going to be in it so you might just as well make up your mind do you promise I promise when Madeline saw Dr Katz she cried for Joy she hugged her as if she'd never let her go oh doctor brushed and brushed Dr Katz until late that night and they fell fast asleep together And next morning which was Saturday Mr cookie Mrs cookie and Madeline went down to the Royal Hotel carrying Dr Katz in a hat box the people in charge of the show put Dr Katz in a nice looking cage and soon the crowds came they walked from one cage to another and stopped for a long time in front of Dr Katz the children couldn't get over the 23 toes and Dr Katz was given a blue ribbon for being a very unusual cat that was a proud and happy moment for Madeline Mrs cookie was happy too and even Mr cookie looked pleased as for Dr Katz she began to purr very loudly and then she smiled in fact it was very very nice and so Dr Katz went back to her comfortable way of living and before long summer had come Dr Katz liked warm weather best of all she was curled up on a cushion in the living room with a dreamy look on her face from time to time she washed herself lazily she really didn't have to because she couldn't have been any cleaner if you had sent her to the laundry Mrs cookie came into the room humming a tune then Madeline came skipping in well Madeleine it won't be long now we should be moving up to the place in a few days I know mother I can hardly wait the place is so pretty in early summer now this would be a good time to tell you about the place it was the Cookie's country house and it didn't have any other name now some people buy a summer house and 10 minutes later they decide to call it seven pines or Twin Oaks or something like that well for three years the cookies had considered a few names but hadn't liked any of them quite enough in the meantime they got into the habit of calling it the place they even thought there was something sweet about such a name Place stretched out for hundreds of Acres lots of it was covered with thick Woods now Dr Katz couldn't really remember the country but they kept repeating words like Outdoors outside and trees those words she understood and they were exciting words well that evening Mr cookie came home from a place he called the office and after dinner the family went into the living room and did a lot of talking Dr Katz listened hard she'd waited all day long to hear more about their plans for the summer because of course she would go too well Mr cookie could tell that Dr Katz was excited he winked at Mrs cookie and Madeleine and pretended to be talking to himself well I think it might be better if we stayed in town this summer Dr Katz almost stopped breathing Mrs cookie was always ready for a little joke too okay I wonder whether that might be fun I've never spent a summer in the city Dr Katz was so disappointed she could have cried but Madeline noticed Dr Katz's face she just couldn't stand it she ran over to her picked her up and hugged her don't you believe one word of it Dr Katz of course we're going out to the place and that means you too Dr Katz looked as if she could kiss Madeline she settled back on her cushion and purred happily all evening well in a few days the excitement began pack this pack that don't forget this be sure to take that did you ship the trunks Tom have you got your books Madeleine Tom carry the suitcases Susie bring the cookbook you never heard such goings on Madeline was first in the car with her precious cat there were a few cheery goodbyes to the elevator man goodbye Herman goodbye folks have a nice summer and the car moved off they headed straight for the place and before very long they were there trunks were being unpacked clothes were put away in closets and Madeleine was having a heart-to-heart talk with Dr Katz now remember you're not to stray too far from the house be sure and return every evening before dark don't get into any arguments with bulldogs and don't fall into the lake the last few words Dr Katz didn't quite hear she was off to do a little exploring for the first two or three days life went on smoothly at the place Mr cookie went to his office every morning on an early train and returned in time for a swim Madeleine was taking tennis lessons from her mother and Dr Katz had plenty of time to herself she went for long walks in the woods and spent a lot of time at her favorite sport which was hunting now no one knows how many animals or Birds she really caught but she was saving up a lot of stories to tell her children someday her sense of smell had grown much Keener no matter where she happened to be whenever the smell of cooking reached her nose she would come running home straight as an arrow well late one afternoon Madeline was helping Susie in the kitchen Madeline will you gather a few flowers for the table dear yes mother right away Madeline took along the garden shears in a big basket she walked a little way and saw some lovely flowers but just a little further ahead there were prettier ones and so it went before she knew it she had walked far far away she was hot and tired and very sleepy she sat down on a cool Mossy Rock to rest for a while and her eyes closed at once quite some time later Madeleine awoke with a start she jumped up wildly it was dark she couldn't remember where she was of course she was frightened who wouldn't be now I'm not going to cry unless I keep a clear head I might be lost all night in the woods but where's the road and where's the house oh dear I can't see a single thing and then she couldn't help it she did cry she was really lost Mr cookie and Mrs cookie and Susie were out with flashlights calling her name at the top of their lungs Madeleine Madeleine but the wind was blowing in the other direction and Madeline couldn't hear a thing well it didn't take long for Dr Katz to understand what was wrong out to the woods she bounded without wasting a second oh the ground that cat covered in a few minutes she kept sniffing all the way her whiskers were stiff and straight As she tried to find the tiniest sign of Madeleine once or twice she saw a field mouse which she might have caught but she had no time for such things now it wasn't easy even for Dr Katz to search through the dark woods but not for a moment did she give up searching or stopped to rest and then at last in a little clearing ahead she saw Madeline Dr Katz bound to her side oh oh Dr Cat we've all been worried sick about you now let's hurry back home I know the shortest way I'll go ahead slowly you'll be sure to follow me and in a fairly short time Madeline was safely home again they hugged Madeline and kissed her and called her all the pet names they could think of Dr Katz wondered if anybody was ever going to notice her then Mr cookie and Mrs cookie and Madeline one after the other said wonderful things about Dr Katz well I would like to say that I consider Dr Katz a member of my family oh yes a very special member now listen you know as well as I do she's the most important member of all and Dr Katz a remarkable cat was the happiest cat in the world
