Enemy planes assail British ships and score hits. (explosions, repeated) Heavy forces are poured ashore, typical of the way the Allied advance is continually reinforced. The British have the toughest assignment, driving against stubbornly battling Nazi panzers. They must fight for every yard of ground they capture. (gunfire) Heavy enemy losses as German resistance is crushed and among the host of prisoners captured are many belonging to the crack panzer unit named after the Arch Nazi Göring, the Hermann Göring Division. A type of vaunting German arrogance. The wreck of the panzers marks the trail of Allied victory. The Americans, having swept over most of Sicily, join in the battle for the eastern tip. Cantania captured by General Montgomery and his Eighth Army. The surrender of a city and its Italian general who capitulates. The fall of Sicily to the Allies is guaranteed by the Italian refusal to fight. They welcome the Allies. The prisoners are lined up, but one officer stands on his dignity. What do you want, a limousine? Get across. Gun pointed at the pretentious officer who marches dignity and all, the anti-war feeling attending the fall of Mussolini is reflected in the enthusiasm for surrender here in Sicily. [[THE MOVIES GO TO WAR]] [[Prepared by JACK HANEY]] [[Described by LOWELL THOMAS]] [02:10] (music throughout interrupted by dialogue) Soldiers marching into a Hollywood studio may be taken as a symbol as how largely the motion picture industry has dedicated itself to the service of the armed forces. Members of the technical unit whose work will be with be film. Here they get instruction, they study training films that the industry has made. The motion picture industry devoting its practice skill to the production of motion pictures for the Army and Navy. The soldiers learn how to do it themselves. The science of the camera is taught to them by a studio expert who discloses the mysteries of the mechanism. They get complete instructions until they are ready to go on the job as military cameraman. Brigadier General F.H. Osborn tells of still another service performed and expresses the appreciation of the Army. {{OSBORN}} "This is the anniversary of the gift by the motion picture industry of the newest Hollywood films in 16mm size for free showing to the American soldier overseas. In the Caribbean, in South America, on the islands of the Atlantic, in Africa, Persia, India, China, Australia and the islands of the Pacific and in the far Aleutians. The American soldier sees these pictures and feels a touch of home and the thought of those who sent them." Motion picture stars are doing a great job entertaining servicemen. We see John Garfield, Bette Davis, and Eddie Cantor at the Hollywood Canteen and also Ann Miller and Linda Darnell. (cheering) Bob Hope and Frances Langford. (cheering) At home and overseas, the stars tour the camps and entertain. {BOB HOPE} "And one thing I like is the English girls for they whistle back. (laughter) Ahoo." Comedian Joey Brown is always making faces and this time he gives an imitation of that awful mug. (cheering) {{JOEY BROWN: affecting German speech} "Ladies and Gentleman of Germany, I promise you something and dos I or dos I don't keep my promises. Answer me those questions. Dos I or dos I don't, answer me that. I dare you." (laughter) Betty Grable and look at the rush, she may get writer's cramp signing autographs but it's all a part of motion picture people doing their bit in wartime and its fun says Betty. The French Committee of National Liberation has formed an agreement whereby Giraud commands all its military forces while General de Gaulle is the political head. [[SECRETARY STIMSON In England]] [05:19] (music throughout) American Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson is entertained by British Minister Winston Churchill and Mrs. Churchill and with them is United States Ambassador Winant. An inspection of close defenses at Dover as Secretary Stimson visits war area overseas. And at an American airbase, he decorates a hero of sky battle with the Congressional Medal of Honor, America's highest war award for Sergeant Maynard Smith, a flying man from Indiana. Hitherto they've been Auxiliary, the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps. Now they've become The Women's Army Corps. At Des Moines, Colonel Oveta Culp Hobby, Commander of the WAACS, swears in 3,000. They take the oath as regular soldiers {WACS} "As soldiers" {OVETA CULP HOBBY} "In the Army of the United States of America." {WACS} "In the Army of the United States of America." {HOBBY} "Women's Army Corps Component." {WACS} "Women's Army Corps Component." Girls, you're in the Army now! (cheers) The WACS have dropped an 'a' from their name and they don't seem to miss it.
