Played on October 10, 1970 at Kenan Stadium, Chapel Hill, NC. South Carolina Gamecocks win 35 to 21. GAME RECAP: Sophomore QB Jackie Young came off the bench in the fourth quarter and led the Gamecocks to two quick touchdowns to seal the victory against the home-standing Tar Heels. North Carolina had battled back to tie the score at 21 after the Gamecocks had sprinted to a 21-7 halftime lead. A Dickie Harris 97-yard punt return and a Tommy Suggs-led passing attack carved out the early margin for the Gamecocks. TB Billy Ray Rice contributed a brilliant 65-yard sprint to give the Gamecocks the halftime lead. UNC RB Don McCauley led the Tar Heels ground attack with two touchdowns before Young took over in the fourth period with a 50-yard touchdown pass to flanker Jim Mitchell followed by a 3-yard TD pass to TE Doug Hamrick. Safety Bo Davies paced the defense with his fifth interception of the season, literally stealing a pass from the Tar Heels. FINAL SCORE: South Carolina 35-21.
