GAME RECAP: Senior QB Jeff Grantz amassed 268 yards in total offense to propel the Gamecocks to a 23-17 upset win over Georgia Tech in Coach Jim Carlen's debut as Carolina's head coach. Grantz ran for 38 yards and one touchdown while passing for 223 more, completing 14 of 19 passes. Flanker Randy Chastain and RB Kevin Long caught touchdown passes that proved to be the key receptions of the game. A first-quarter field goal by Bobby Marino rounded out the scoring for the Gamecocks. The victory was particularly sweet for Coach Carlen, a 1955 graduate of Georgia Tech, where he played for the legendary Bobby Dodd. FINAL SCORE: South Carolina 23-17.
