First Aid For Little People

foreign [Music] [Music] Ty Dumpty had a great fall in all the king's cows and All the King's Men cows that's supposed to be horses horses yeah all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put Humpty together again I'll bet I could cause I know first aid [Music] oh first aid is only for grown-up people I don't need it everybody should know first aid I remember my uncle Dr Herkimer saying Marvin my boy everyone should know first aid so I want you to remember the things I'm going to tell you okay Uncle Dr Herkimer and that's when he told me all about first aid if you know so much tell me what is first aid is it different than second Aid it sure is Uncle Dr Herkimer explained it this way to understand what first aid is Imagine two boys are playing all of a sudden Joel Falls and hurts his arm are you hurt I think I broke my arm it'll be okay I know what to do Ron is the first one to help him to give him Aid so first aid means the first help you give to a person who is hurt ah I don't need to know about first aid none of my friends have accidents don't be too sure harv Uncle Dr Herkimer says nobody can tell when an accident is going to happen that's why everybody should know some first aid [Music] the first thing to know is to keep calm and cool so that you can think about what to do if the person looks badly hurt the most important thing you can do is get help get help sure you should look for an adult what if you can't find any help then Uncle Dr Herkimer says another way to get help is by using the telephone and do you know how to use the telephone in an emergency no I don't everyone should think ahead about what to do and try to think of the yeah someone you might call if you needed to get help a good idea is to have your parents write down telephone numbers for you to call if you need help Susie didn't ask her parents to write down numbers for her so when her friend fell out of a swing she did the next best thing she called the telephone operator this is done by dialing the old operator there's been an accident my friend Betty's been hurt the operator will ask you questions that you should answer as best you can how is she hurt I don't know she fell out of the swing and she doesn't move where are you at my house my mother isn't home what is your address 627 Oakland Avenue by knowing how to use the telephone you can get help right away from someone who knows what to do well I don't need to learn about that none of my friends would fall out of a swing but there are other kinds of accidents Uncle Dr Herkimer says hey you should know what to do for the kinds of accidents that happen most often how are you like what well like a scrape or a cut [Music] do you know what to do for a scrape or a cut sure stick it together with glue no you want to wash it because it's important to get it clean after the dirt is washed off put on a bandage to protect it thanks of course if a cut is bleeding really bad you have to slow down or stop the bleeding how do you do that Uncle Dr Herkimer knows how [Music] bleeding can be very serious if it's only a small cut or a scratch a person can go for help but if the bleeding is really bad I mean really bad then it has to be slowed down or stopped the best way is to fold a piece of cloth like a handkerchief or any piece of cloth oh even your shirt and hold it over the cut this has to be held tight even if you have to use both hands if you don't have a piece of cloth just use your bare hands and press firmly help help you can't let go to run for help so you have to keep pressing and call for help until somebody hears you well I'm always careful nothing like that will happen to me but something that might happen to you is a nosebleed do you know what to do if you get a nosebleed ah tie a bandage around your nose you can't tie a bandage around your nose you can't no Uncle Dr Herkimer says one way to help stop a nosebleed is to lie down breathe through your mouth and hold a handkerchief or other cloth firmly against your nose it sometimes helps if the cloth is cold and damp another way is to squeeze your nose and lean forward so that the blood doesn't run down your throat what if it doesn't stop then you should get help ah nothing like that is ever gonna happen to me well maybe not but you might get something in your eye and you should know what to do and what not to do laughs don't rub it why not because it might cause whatever is in your eye to scratch your eyeball [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] the best thing to do is to close your eyes gently and pull the top lid away from your eyeball until the tears begin to flow one reason you have tears is to wash things out of your eyes if that doesn't work go for help well nothing like that is going to happen to me will something that might happen is getting burned there are a lot of ways a person can get burned if it's a small burn Ow like you might get from taking hold of something you didn't know was hot you can take away some of the Pain by putting cold water on the burn but you have to do it right away if it's a big burn get help as fast as you can I've got one I'll bet you don't know what's that what if somebody is hurt so they stop breathing [Music] well it's really bad if a person stops breathing so you should get help right away from an adult ah I don't have to worry no accident will happen to me hello oh my arm I know what to do harm seahorse you never know when an accident will happen that's why you have to know what to do before it happens you're right Marv because if accidents can happen to me they can happen to anybody so know your first aid that's right [Music]
