Juxtaposes the great religious faith and architectural and artistic achievements of this period with its abject poverty and ignorance., This film examines the great faith and riches in architecture of medieval times, contrasted with the abject poverty, ignorance, and fear of that period. It was a time of pilgrimages to shrines and holy relics, a chance to do penance for one's sins and avoid the devil. It was an age of indulgences, treachery, greed, and superstition accompanied by idealism. The Franciscans reacted against the growing riches of the established church and made their own vow of poverty.
