Description: This film short promotes the city of Louisville, Kentucky and a clothing line of Navy and Old Salt sportswear featuring a type of easy care polyester fabric known as Fortrel. The clothing line was sold by J.C. Penney in the 1960s. The film starts with shots of a riverboat along the Ohio River as well as shots of the city limits sign. At 1:20 a visit to Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby. At 1:41 the Derby Museum is shown. At 2:00 college couples pose for snapshots at a statue of Daniel Boone. At 2:15 they visit Farmington, which was designed by Thomas Jefferson. At 2:51 a visit to the University of Louisville and a statue of Rodin's Thinker. At 3:19 a visit to the Kentucky Railroad Museum. At 3:50, 1000 revelers are seen in front of the J.C. Penney building. The parade moves down to the wharf area where the steamboat Belle of Louisville is docked. A co-ed is crowned beauty queen and then the sternwheeler gets underway. The Stephen Foster Singers perform at 5:30. Belle of Louisville is a steamboat owned and operated by the city of Louisville, Kentucky, and moored at its downtown wharf next to the Riverfront Plaza/Belvedere during its annual operational period. Originally named Idlewild, she was built by James Rees & Sons Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the West Memphis Packet Company in 1914 and was first put into service on the Allegheny River. Constructed with an all-steel superstructure and asphalt main deck, the steamboat is said[by whom?] to hold the all-time record in her class for miles traveled, years in operation, and places visited. [Music] Louisville Kentucky established in 1778 and the strategic Falls of the mighty Ohio River today awarded the title all-america City for outstanding progress in Community Relations noted for its hospitality Louisville is a fun city to visit particularly the month around Kentucky Derby time when additional entertainment is always scheduled theme of this year's festivities explore Louisville with its many historic romantic and cultural places of interest let's accompany two typical college couples as they explore Louisville dressed in exciting Navy and old salt coordinated sportswear fashioned with easy-care fabrics of Fortran with them we'll visit some of Louisville's attractions join in the holiday spirit and excitement [Music] first Churchill Downs most famous racetrack in the world all of the Kentucky Derby horse racing's greatest event the bluegrass area around Louisville is renowned for the quality of its thoroughbreds the Kentucky Derby Museum houses a perfectly scaled model of Churchill Downs on display our mementos of 90 runnings of the Derby going back to 1875 a tired and crisp stayfresh poplin of four Trull our cottage couples pose for souvenirs snapshots with Kentucky's best-known pioneer Daniel Boone been over to Farmington stately historic old mansion designed by Thomas Jefferson and in which Abraham Lincoln spent three Pleasant weeks where the charm of yesterday blends with the new look of today a visit to the University of Louisville founded in 1798 the oldest municipal university in America and one of its largest and most distinguished it comprises 10 colleges including engineering medicine dentistry and music [Music] dressed now in sports were well designed for climbing our friends clamber aboard some of the old rolling stock in the unique Kentucky Railway Museum located on land donated by the city of Louisville the museum is a nonprofit corporation devoted to preserving the nostalgia of railroading [Music] next a high point in our visit to Louisville the gathering of nearly 1,000 revelers all in navy and old salt in front of a specially decorated JCPenney Company building led by Louisville's mayor William Conger and County Judge Marlo Cooke the colorful parade continues down to the fourth Street war [Music] Barracuda University co-ed is crowned queen with a yachting cap then everyone boards the Belle of Louisville the recently restored 50 year old sternwheeler for the maiden voyage of the season [Music] now up the Ohio River entertainment during the cruise includes the famed Stephen Foster singers the audience loves every Nova and there's a Dixieland twist band led by a Kentucky Colonel naturally our two legions in their fresh lightweight sportswear join in the dancing [Music] everyone's sorry to see the fun-filled crews of the Bell come to an end and a house party closes out our memorable Louisville visit [Music]
